Sonoran Prevention Works is a statewide nonprofit organization that centers harm reduction in Arizona through participant-driven advocacy, education, and outreach. SPW takes a systems-based and person-first approach to drug use, working to support individuals in achieving safety and support, provide technical support to organizations who interface with people who use drugs, and change local and state-level policy to embrace evidence-based changes. SPW currently maintains a staff of over 20 employees in 5 counties, with a budget exceeding $2 million.


Position 

SPW’s Director of Programs is responsible for implementation of all of the organization’s programmatic activities. The Director of Programs indirectly manages all front-line staff, works with the Program Managers to ensure efficient program provision, and as a member of the Leadership Team collaborates on high-level organizational decisions. The Director of Programs sustains SPW’s vision of health equity and bodily autonomy, and infuses it into our service delivery.


Regular responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Strategic Thought Leadership
  • Responsible for directing collaborative work across sectors with diverse, strong, and influential partners to achieve common goals.  
  • Engage in national-, state-, and local-level relationship building to increase SPW’s visibility and ensure strategic programmatic and organizational growth.
  • Participate in Leadership and board activities to inform and lead the organization’s strategic initiatives
  • Direct budget development for new programs and renewals
  • Supervision and Program Direction
  • Directly supervise all the Program Managers, and indirectly supervise all SPW programmatic staff
  • Develop and implement strategies that will maximize the alignment among program areas.
  • Recruit, hire, and oversee training and orientation of all staff members.
  • Identify capacities needed (skill sets and competencies) to achieve programmatic and organizational goals. Work with senior staff to ensure those capacities are developed or acquired.
  • Works with finance staff and program managers to oversee management of programmatic budgets to ensure effective and compliant use of grant and contract funds.  
  • Ensure compliance for all program grants and contracts; work with grants team to implement and/or improve reporting tools; and ensure timely, accurate data collection and reports and communications to funders.



Required Qualifications

  • Must be highly proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Drive Applications
  • Supernatural communication skills and a great team player
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • An advanced harm reduction analysis
  • At least 5 years experience managing staff
  • At least 3 years experience facilitating groups and meetings
  • At least 2 years experience managing a budget exceeding $250,000
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial justice
  • Experience with long-term project implementation & management
  • Experience building strong, diverse professional relationships
  • Effective public speaker
  • Strong, adaptive writing skills
  • High attention to detail
  • Must be self-motivated and creative in problem-solving
  • Must have a habit of excellent attendance
  • Willingness to commit to the organization for at least 3 years
  • Bachelor’s degree


Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep connection to Arizona
  • Lived experience of drug use or sex work
  • 3+ years experience working at a substance use social service agency or in a medical setting
  • Experienced in maintaining work-life balance
  • Experience leading coalitions and collaboratives
  • Familiarity with Canva, Adobe Illustrator, or Microsoft Publisher
  • Familiarity with Salesforce
  • Familiarity with social marketing campaigns
  • Desire to grow with the organization in the long-term
  • Master’s degree in social work, public health, public administration or related field
  • Applicants fluent in Spanish or Indigenous American languages are strongly encouraged to apply

Reports to: Deputy Director & Executive Director

Supervision responsibilities: Program Managers

Travel: Approximately 10% of the time
