Position Title: Campaigns Organizer

Position Location: Remote, U.S.

Local Progress is seeking a Campaigns Organizer.

About Local Progress

Local Progress (LP) is a movement of local elected officials advancing a racial and economic justice agenda through all levels of local government. We are elected leaders who build power with underrepresented communities, share bold ideas and policy among our network and fight to reshape what is possible in our localities all across the country. Hand-in-hand with community-based organizations and unions committed to advancing a social justice agenda, the elected officials and staff of Local Progress are building the network to facilitate a genuine “inside/outside” strategy to reforming municipal policy and politics. Founded in 2012, Local Progress has grown to over 1,200 local elected official members representing cities, counties, and towns in 47 states.

Local Progress is a hosted project of the Center for Popular Democracy and CPD Action (together, CPD/A).

About the Position:

Working as part of a national program and policy team, the Campaigns Organizer will work to engage Local Progress members in the programmatic priorities of the network, including public safety, economic justice, housing, and immigrant rights, with a strong emphasis on public safety.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is eager to build the organizing and campaign capacity of the Local Progress network, as well as closely collaborate with local elected leaders in working hand-in-hand with impacted communities to win transformational local policy on some of the most pressing issues facing communities today. Notably, the Campaigns Organizer will play a significant role in Local Progress’ public safety work, which prioritizes working with members who are embarking on local police/sheriff budget reallocation efforts and expanding transformational safety programs like non-emergency response and violence prevention programs. This role will provide timely resources, strategy, and collaboration to Local Progress members on the forefront of these efforts.

The Campaigns Organizer will report to the Associate Program Director.

Primary Responsibilities

The Campaigns Organizer will:

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Local Progress members across a range of local jurisdictions.
  • Develop campaign strategies in deep collaboration with Local Progress members in a range of jurisdictions in service of local policy and implementation efforts.
  • Lead mobilization efforts to engage Local Progress members in rapid response situations, state/national advocacy actions, event attendance, and network-wide collective actions.
  • Assist with the development of materials both specific to particular local contexts and scalable across the Local Progress network, including landscape review, tracking, comparative analysis, strategy memos, and campaign workplans.
  • Conceptualize program and workshop agendas, including identifying and preparing speakers.
  • Collaborate across Local Progress teams to support organizational activities and infrastructure including member programming, state chapter activities, reports, convenings, web products, etc.
  • Build and maintain relationships with national and local partners as well as allied organizations.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • 5-6 years of experience with at least 2-3 years experience with issue campaigns, policy advocacy, or government. Previous experience in issues related to public safety and policing is a plus, but not required;
  • Experience in relational organizing and an ability to relate to a diverse group of people from a variety of local contexts and backgrounds;
  • Experience developing and executing campaign and organizing workplans;
  • Previous experience working with elected officials a plus, but not required;
  • Attention to detail and strong writing skills, with an interest in learning about a wide range of issues and the ability to convey and translate complex information for a variety of audiences;
  • Adept at creatively and proactively identifying strategic campaign opportunities for both collective action by Local Progress members and in support of local issue campaign efforts;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, create and execute work plans, anticipate obstacles and identify ways to navigate challenges, identify and involve stakeholders appropriately, and drive projects independently;
  • Ability to take initiative, use good judgment, willingness to learn, and ask questions as needed;
  • A commitment to inside/outside strategy and movement governance that features deep partnership between “outside” organizing and “inside” elected officials;
  • A demonstrated commitment to social, racial, and economic justice and a deep interest in local policy, politics, and government;
  • Ability to travel occasionally (approximately 10%) when conditions allow.

Resume review will begin August 2.
