Description

Oil Change International (OCI) is seeking an experienced, organized, and detail-oriented researcher for a contract of 20 hours per week. This is a remote position supporting a team based across the United States. This is an initial 6-month position with potential for renewal. 

The researcher will work with Oil Change’s United States and Research teams to draft briefings and reports and support research into fossil fuel subsidies, fossil fuel phaseout, and countering oil and gas industry narratives. The researcher will work with OCI’s United States team managers, research directors, and other relevant program team members to determine the most effective writing and communications outputs to support OCI’s work in the United States.

Key Responsibilities

  • Performing desk research identifying and quantifying federal and state subsidies in oil- and gas-producing states; 
  • Writing briefings and contributing to reports on United States oil and gas policy, oil and gas exports, and climate issues; 
  • Drafting short briefings to support data and information needs from frontline movement partners resisting oil and gas expansion; and
  • Working with Oil Change International’s Communications team to communicate research findings and key messages to partners, media, and the public. 

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • At least 5 years of research experience in United States climate and fossil fuel advocacy; 
  • Proven ability to write with the goal of influencing an outcome; 
  • Ability to fact-check data and text; 
  • Strong computer and internet research skills, including experience with spreadsheets and data presentation; 
  • Familiarity with oil and gas and climate politics in the United States; 
  • Time and project management skills, with ability to shift priorities depending on urgency; 
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail; 
  • Ability to adapt and be flexible as plans shift; 
  • Ability to work alone but in collaboration with others; 
  • Commitment to equity and to the mission of Oil Change International; 
  • Familiarity with working in a remote global office environment (e.g. using video calls, messaging platforms); 

Note: Additional skills like traditional and/or new media capability and Spanish-language competency are pluses, but not required.
