The Stimson Center is seeking a full-time Research Associate to support the Global Governance, Justice & Security Program through both research and administrative project activities.

As the world confronts myriad, interconnected challenges -- from ending civil wars and extreme poverty to combating climate change and information warfare -- the very concept of global collective action is in question. At the same time, the world faces a severe, and widening, governance deficit as our system of global governance is continually asked to do more with less. In addition to multiple challenges and obstacles to deliver justice and security across the globe, the current system is under attack by resurgent nationalism, protectionism, and critiques of the multilateral system's legitimacy. Stimson's Global Governance, Justice & Security Program GGJustSec aims to advance more capable global and regional institutions to better cope with existing and emerging global challenges and to create new opportunities through effective multilateral action, including with the global business community and civil society.

The program contributes timely knowledge products to an intergovernmental and multi-stakeholder conversation to produce meaningful changes in the international system. It builds directly on major milestones achieved by the Albright-Gambari Commission on Global Security, Justice & Governance 2014-2016 and Stimson's Just Security 2020 Program 2016-2020, in addition to closely collaborating with the Coalition for the UN We NeedTogether First, and Alliance for Multilateralism. Through a combination of policy dialogues, research and analysis, and online network-building, the program engages stakeholders, including by:

  • Convening track 1.5 global policy dialogues and related public events to promote consensus on priority global governance reform innovations;
  • Building a robust research and policy analysis component to prepare detailed policy reports, background briefs, commentaries, and action plans for each global policy dialogue; and
  • Standing up a new community of practice, the Global Governance Innovation Network, to sustain relationships and promote results of the global policy dialogues and related research products.

Essential Functions:

  • Conduct policy research and co-author/author reports, briefs, articles, and content for the program's Global Governance Innovation Network website;
  • Help organize global policy dialogues: plan and execute event logistics, make travel arrangements, prepare event materials, track event expenses, communicate with participants, etc.
  • Help design and contribute to the preparation of the Global Governance, Justice & Security Program's deliverables, such as research products, public and private events, podcasts, video content, listserv management, and media engagement if you have technical skills, you should let us know;
  • Develop key planning and strategy tools and processes, and support the Program Director with developing concept notes, background briefs, timelines, agendas, and methodologies for the program's activities.
  • Assist with prospective funder research and preparation of funding proposals and funding reports;
  • Provide general program support and administration; and
  • Assist in managing the program's interns and oversee contracts of collaboration with consultants.

Qualifications:

  • A Master's degree in a relevant field;
  • Minimum of two years relevant work experience;
  • Personal commitment to and interest in the substantive work of the project and knowledge of issues related to the role of the United Nations and other international organizations in managing or preventing violent conflict, climate change, and/or cascading instability in the interconnected global economy;
  • Superior writing skills, excellent analytical capabilities, and familiarity with policy and strategic analysis;
  • Strong communication, analytical, and project management skills;
  • Collaborative leadership skills that can help build project teams across organizational and international boundaries;
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple activities and competing priorities and capacity for managing tight timelines; and
  • Full proficiency in English is essential. Knowledge of a second language especially French, Spanish, or Arabic is an asset.
