About NYUJ

New Yorkers United for Justice (NYUJ) is New York’s foremost criminal justice reform coalition, comprised of more than a dozen local and national nonprofit organizations on the forefronts of civil rights, social justice, and legal advocacy and all deeply invested in criminal justice reform in New York State. The NYUJ coalition of organizations is bipartisan, interfaith, and diverse.

NYUJ promotes urgent, common sense reforms to the criminal justice system in the Empire State to improve the fairness of the system, increase public safety, and reduce incarceration. NYUJ does this by educating the public about the criminal justice system and its flaws; supporting officials with the information, tools, and resources they need to make the right decisions about criminal justice reforms; and preventing the spread of misinformation about the system and the people impacted by it.

NYUJ supports bold action by all branches of the government to drive out racism from the system, to treat poor and rich communities equally under the law, to protect the integrity of families impacted by the justice system, and to make all New Yorkers safer. Fundamentally, NYUJ works to ensure that equal access to justice in New York State is neither denied nor limited on the basis of age, race, ethnicity or socioeconomic status, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, religion, or any other improper basis.

Job Summary

The Director of Communications manages NYUJ’s presence across public channels and ensures high quality outputs from all areas the organization. The Director of Communications leads the organization’s creative and editorial efforts on branded communications; executes and oversees the organization’s regular outputs, including social media feeds, publications, donor outreach materials, etc.; and manages the objective setting, revision cycles, and approval processes for content developed by vendors and partners.

The Director of Communications reports to the Executive Director, coordinates activities with the Director of Advocacy and the organization’s Senior Advisors, liaises with Coalition member organizations and their respective communications departments, and works alongside outside communications partners and vendors to help execute projects and campaigns.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

·    Proactively identify and act on opportunities to elevate the NYUJ brand, its Coalition members, and its outputs in the public space.

·    Manage and maintain NYUJ brand standards and communications assets across all channels.

·    Act as the organization’s creative supervisor and chief copy editor, ensuring a consistent and accurate brand voice and image.

·    Act as primary point of contact for NYUJ communications vendors (including PR firms, graphic designers, video producers, and event producers) and oversee the production, revision cycles, and approval process for creative and communications assets.

·    Act as staff liaison to the Media & Messaging Committee of the NYUJ Coalition. Liaise with member organization communications departments to ensure timely coordination among NYUJ member organizations.

·    Manage and maintain the organization’s social media feeds.

·    Manage and maintain the organization’s website, ensuring regular, timely updates to the organization’s online resources library.

·    Working with the Director of Advocacy, finalize and manage the publication of policy and research outputs.

·    Prepare and disseminate leadership communications, including the organization’s newsletter.

·    Assist in the preparation of fundraising materials, including developing brand collateral, drafting donor updates, and assisting with and editing grant proposals.

·    Other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Level of Language Proficiency

Education, Experience, and Competencies:

·      Five (5) years of professional experience in brand communications, advocacy communications, or related fields.

·      Deep commitment to advancing criminal justice reform in New York State and a basic knowledge of criminal justice terminology and landscapes.

·      Exemplary oral and written communication and presentation skills. Keen visual and aesthetic sensibilities.

·      Diplomacy in managing different ideas, perspectives, and political philosophies and balancing them in the development of branded content.

·      Proficiency with major social media/web platforms and related software, including WordPress CMS and Mailchimp. Familiarity with Adobe design software.

·      Vendor and/or budget management experience.
