Position Summary

Writing Works is a unique college readiness and workforce development program that supports emerging teen writers and young adults on their academic and career pathways from high school to college and beyond. Writing Works exposes mentees to the schools and industries in need of their talents, while providing them with personalized mentoring, skill-based training, resources, coaching and networks. 

Girls Write Now seeks an experienced Community Manager (Writing Works) who is comfortable with program and employee management, operations, and partnerships to meet aggressive goals in accordance with the organization’s mission, community and strategic plan. The Community Manager (Writing Works) will be passionate about building partnerships and an expert at relationship management. 

Reporting directly to the Senior Community Manager, the Community Manager (Writing Works) will execute, solidify and grow the Writing Works Program in line with Girls Write Now’s current systems and structures. 

Key targets revolve around growing Writing Works in size, scope of services, and region as it becomes a national and largely virtual program. Writing Works’ primary audiences are mentors, mentees and alumni, as well as both corporate and community partners.

The ideal candidate will be a leader and ambassador for the Writing Works Program while collaborating with key bodies/departments like Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, marketing, and fundraising, while supporting other programs as a key member of the program management leadership team.

Responsibilities:

Projects, Events & Services

  • Curriculum & Workshop Development: Support with the curriculum development and production of Writing Works workshops and corporate employee engagement events, as well as select special events.
  • In-Person & Remote Workshops & Events: In addition to in person events, host and facilitate on-camera workshops and events held remotely over Zoom.
  • College & Career Readiness: Expand Girls Write Now’s college and career readiness curriculum, resources and services, including building and managing a body of “College & Career Guides” who support mentees and mentors with the college admissions process and job coaching and counseling.

Job & Internship Placements: Help build Girls Write Now’s talent pipeline by cultivating, training, referring and placing talented young adults into jobs and internships offered by our corporate partners. This involves helping to develop systems, structures, guidelines and outreach and marketing strategies to do this work on a larger scale.

People Management

  • Youth & Volunteers: Manage “pods” of ~25 mentor/mentee pairs, as well as the team of “Staff Pod Leads” in order to monitor, guide and evaluate pair relationships and writing throughout the program cycle.
  • Alumni: Help build out a robust alumni base of mentors and mentees across life-stages, including developing outreach strategies, tracking systems, engagement events and opportunities.
  • Corporate Partners: Cultivate and partner with corporate sponsors to lead employee engagement workshops/events, and to recruit, refer and place strong candidates from Girls Write Now’s community of mentors, mentees and alumni in internships and jobs.
  • Staff & Consultants: Manage Community/Program Coordinators, Fellows, freelance Teaching Artists, and body of volunteer “College and Career Guides”.

Other Areas of Program Management

  • Enrollment: Play a key role in the annual enrollment initiative from strategy, marketing and outreach to interviewing, onboarding and training. This involves setting targets (with a focus on diversity, region, and size), tailoring the approach for a range of audiences from schools to community partners to corporations, engaging current stakeholders, and researching and cultivating new networks.
  • Program Development & Evaluation: Evaluate and develop data-driven improvements for the Writing Works program and other GWN programs in collaboration with other staff.

Qualifications

Successful candidates will have a strong partnership-building track record, be collaborative, goal-oriented, able to meet deadlines, and focused on deliverables, while demonstrating flexibility and adaptability to new priorities in a fast-paced environment. Preferred candidates have:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • A minimum five years of professional work experience developing and executing on programs, partnerships and managing staff
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong administrative, technological and project management skills (e.g., Salesforce, WordPress, social media platforms, Notion)
  • A deep commitment to the mission of Girls Write Now 
  • Must be available Saturdays and evenings as the program calendar demands

The Community Manager, Writing Works is an exempt employee position with a competitive salary.and benefit package. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
