Position Overview

LFC is seeking an experienced attorney to lead a newly created Juvenile Justice project. Given LFC's priority of keeping staff and clients safe, the position will be remote until it is safe to return to the courts. The Juvenile Justice Project Director will manage and oversee all juvenile delinquency and PINS (Persons in Need of Supervision) proceedings assigned to LFC by the New York County Family Court. The Project Director will be responsible for litigating LFC’s JD and PINS cases and will provide training, guidance, and mentoring to other legal and social work staff involved in the project. As a subject matter expert, the Project Director will also play a key role in helping to define the direction of LFC’s juvenile justice practice. The ideal candidate will embrace LFC’s interdisciplinary attorney/social worker team approach to advocacy, on behalf of every client.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in all aspects of litigation, including client intake, interviews, motion practice, negotiations, court appearances, witness preparation, parole/remand hearings, fact-finding trials and dispositional hearings. Caseloads of JD/PINS cases, like all cases at LFC, will always be handled by both an attorney and a social worker
  • Collaborate with social worker(s) assigned to the project to identify and evaluate relevant community-based programs/alternatives and residential placements
  • Collaborate with consulting investigator to develop defense strategies

Policy Advocacy and Strategic Partnerships

  • Identify and build strategic partnerships to drive systemic change in the area of child welfare and juvenile justice reform.
  • In collaboration with the LFC’s Public Policy and Special Litigation Project Director, identify opportunities to engage in legislative action and/or impact litigation to drive systemic change.

Candidate Profile     

  • The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 3 years of experience litigating delinquency and PINS cases in New York State. Additional experience litigating abuse, neglect, termination of parental rights, family offense and custody petitions is preferred.
  • The Project Director should possess a high level of intersectional cultural competency, as LFC represents youth and engages stakeholders from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and identities.
  • The ideal candidate should have strong persuasive writing and active listening skills, enabling them to communicate effectively with clients, professional colleagues, and judges.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Admitted to NYS Bar
  • Minimum of 3 years delinquency litigation experience in NYS Family Courts
  • Demonstrated commitment to the rights of children and youth
  • Commitment to interdisciplinary practice of law using an attorney-social worker team model
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively under pressure and in crisis situations
  • Well-organized, motivated, creative and independent
  • Commitment to providing culturally sensitive services
  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal, writing, and interviewing skills
