Norman Rockwell Museum seeks a Director of Facilities and Safety (DFS) to ensure a safe, secure and effective environment for the Museum’s buildings, grounds, art collections and visitor experience. The position oversees a versatile team of workers and contracted services and reports to the Chief Operating Officer, works closely with the Director of Public Operations and Visitor Engagement and is a member of the Museum’s Operations team.

The Director of Facilities and Safety reports to the Chief Operating Officer and works closely with the Director of Public Operations and Visitor Engagement to provide security and ensure safe conditions during public operations, and while closed; and the DFS is responsible for the safety, appearance and maintenance of all buildings, grounds, systems and equipment. The Museum’s 36 acre campus abuts the Housatonic River and consists of four main structures: 1859 Historic Marble Mansion, Linwood House (6,000 sq. ft.), renovated 1840 Rockwell’s wood frame clapboard Artist Studio (2,000 sq. ft.), Renovated 1890s Shingle Style carriage barn which serves as on site security staff housing, (2,230 sq. ft.) and 1993 state of the art full HVAC Museum building (27,000 sq. ft.) plus several small out buildings.

The position establishes operating and capital maintenance schedule and recommends improvements as needed to ensure a safe, secure and effective environment for the Museum’s art collections and visitor experience. Manages and directs facilities maintenance staff and contracted services; is adept at a range of skills, systems operations, and interacts with all levels of museum personnel, fostering an atmosphere of cooperation and support.  

Qualified candidates must have excellent planning and organizational skills and be able to demonstrate positive relationship skills with staff, visitors, vendors, contractors, town officials, emergency personnel, etc.  The ability to perform a wide variety of general and skilled activities, i.e. carpentry, painting, and miscellaneous repairs is essential. Must be computer savvy with proven skills using Microsoft Office and ability to learn other software programs is required. The responsibilities and requirements are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Job Requirements

  • Full time, 5-day per week on site, with 7-day public operation, some evenings, some weekend days.
  • Responsibilities are 24 hours with the ability to respond to necessary situations at all times is essential. 
  • Welcoming and friendly to all, team player, and willingness to learn. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent decision-making skills, judgement, and adaptability.
  • Lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.

Salary

USD 65,000 - USD 85,000The position is a member of the Museum’s Operating team and reports to the COO/CFO, with lateral team accountability with numerous departments. The starting salary range is $65,000 – $80,000 commensurate with experience.
