The Communications Coordinator will plan, create, and execute digital and printed materials to disseminate through our communications channels. The Communications Coordinator reports to the Communications Manager and collaborates with other members of the team to execute the communications strategy. In this role, the Communications Coordinator will work closely with the communications team and staff across the organization to support day-to-day requests and maintenance of our digital platforms, lead graphic design and layout of programmatic materials (digital and print), keep an ear to the ground for breaking news, and uplift opportunities for community members to connect to the movement.

The National Harm Reduction Coalition is an advocacy and capacity-building organization that promotes the health and dignity of individuals and communities who are affected by drug use and structural violence. As a national organization we advance harm reduction policy and practice through six core programs:
1. harm reduction policy and advocacy
2. harm reduction resources including in-person and virtual trainings, self-paced online learning modules, publications, and maps to locate syringe service and naloxone programs
3. national and regional convening
4. grant making
5. fiscal sponsorship
6. technical assistance on overdose prevention education, hepatitis C prevention and treatment, syringe access expansion, and the US opioid crisis
Our programs center racial equity as guided by our North Star:: the National Harm Reduction Coalition creates spaces and dialogue that help heal the harms of racialized drug policies.
● Center racial justice in communications; proactively apply a racial justice lens to communicate our values and who we feature in our work.
● Execute the day to day communications activities including social media channels, responding to internal requests, and coordinating with the Communications Manager on the editorial/content calendar driven by National Harm Reduction Coalition’s communications strategy.
● Participate in the crisis communications process when necessary to respond to emergent organization needs.
● Create and schedule digital content for communications campaigns, programmatic events and resources, and uplift intersectional work including sharing content and driving action among our online community; Monitor community engagement and responsiveness on social media platforms with consistent replies and reactions.
● Act as a liaison for day to day development of activities/materials with internal team members including graphics for social media, event sign ups, website calendar, public-facing reports and resources, and other products as delegated by the Communications Manager.
● Write and review content to adhere to accessibility standards for digital content, virtual events, and printed materials, including the process for materials being translated when applicable.
● Utilize brand style guide to design content for communications channels and projects.
● Participate in the review, revision and update of the organization’s communications strategy on a yearly basis with quarterly review of metrics and performance, with an emphasis on bringing themes and lessons learned from online community spaces and programmatic activities to adjust our strategy based on emergent trends.
● Review resources, publications, and other materials regularly to identify the need to update materials.
● Support the ongoing capacity building and training of internal team members to follow communications best practices and processes, including relaying trends with challenges faced by internal team members to inform capacity building and training efforts led by the Associate Director of Communications.
● Maintain organized systems for all communications media; photos, style guides, press releases, blog entries, social media plans, project-based communications, and artwork.
● Participate in inter-department working groups, committees, hiring processes, and other opportunities to gain insight into other department work and activities that strengthen our organization.
● Inspired by National Harm Reduction Coalition’s mission and strategic priorities
● A minimum of two (2) years of experience in communications and/or marketing
● Experience in harm reduction, public health, or social justice preferred
● Experience with creating and managing digital content and maintaining and cultivating online communities through communications channels
● Graphic design experience required (examples requested as part of the interview process)
● Outstanding management and planning skills, including the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a decentralized environment
● Experience with WordPress, Thinkific, EveryAction, and content scheduling tools.
● Excellent and nuanced writing ability and range
● Strong interpersonal skills, persuasive presentation and public speaking skills
TRAVEL: Position requires moderate travel (approximately 14 days per year)
