Second Harvest Heartland’s (SHH) child hunger strategy supports our organizational mission; ending hunger through community partnerships. The Child Hunger Program Specialist plays a key role in ongoing refinement, implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive Child Hunger Strategy aimed at transforming the way state and local communities support children and their families who struggle to put food on the table. This position is a key relationship holder with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders, responsible both for general program management and focused investment in select focal communities. Success requires deep collaboration with local community partners while also supporting macro-level systems change.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with a broad set of community partners including local government agencies, school districts, community-based organizations, child and hunger-focused community interest groups.
- Engage state and local government agency staff as needed to remain abreast of their priorities and collaborate to support service delivery systems best practice and resource sharing (e.g. training and promotion materials, online communication tools, etc.).
- Cultivate close relationships with counterparts at national hunger relief organizations such as Feeding America and Share our Strength to share best practices, thought leadership and program trends.
- Manage ongoing coordination with counterparts in other SHH departments engaged in child hunger sub-strategies for public policy and practice change, agency partner network strengthening, SNAP and Summer Food Service Program (SFSP).
- Co-design with the SHH Communication team program communication strategy and information/education/communication (IEC) tools.
Technical Leadership and Program Management
- Maintain technical expertise in school-based federal nutrition program policies and procedures.
- Serve as child hunger program expert, remaining up-to-date on latest research, emerging trends and best practices.
- Contribute to development of collective impact approaches and tools to transform the way communities address child hunger locally and influence/support state level policy change.
- Facilitate focal community impact partners use of best practices in program outreach, operations and regulatory compliance through peer mentor agency connections, provision of job aids, site visits, etc.
- Support development and monitoring of the broader SHH annual child hunger workplan, including process and outcome goals.
- Respond to data requests from SHH Development and Communication staff to support drafting of grant applications, reports and communication campaign activities.
- Manage SHH’s partner grant programs including: setting grant program goals, call for proposals, application review, award communication and recipient reporting.
- Maintain effective and up-to-date record keeping systems for effective relationship, financial and program outcome management.
Reporting, Monitoring and Evaluation
- In collaboration with the SHH Child Hunger team and other stakeholders, ensure ongoing relevancy of strategy monitoring and evaluation indicators.
- Create a set of data collection and reporting processes that meet SHH team, donor and community needs for qualitative and quantitative data.
- Provide technical assistance to SHH Community Engagement Coordinator and focal community groups related to program goal development; as well as data collection, analysis, presentation and application of findings.
- Prepare a broad range of internal and external reports including program outputs, lessons learned and recommendations.
- Hire, train and supervise Community Engagement Coordinator, interns and volunteers.
- Mentor and provide career development to staff demonstrating SHH values and a norm of continuous quality improvement.
- Be a change agent! Actively promote co-creation and transformative partnership practices.
- Spend approximately 10-25% time in the community developing relationships essential for success (e.g. inter-agency work groups, stakeholder meetings, food-related community events, etc.).
- Support innovation with an openness to new ideas, learning from failures, asking others for their opinions and flexibility to support change as needed.
- Provide timely and accurate oral and written communication.
- Actively listen to others and demonstrate understanding of other points of view.
- Understand safety policies and actively promote safe practices in all program activities.
- Balance consulting with Sr. Hunger Programs Manager on priorities and working independently.
- A bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience in a related area
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in program management, direct client work or volunteer services
- Experience related to federal school nutrition programs higher desirable
- Strong process and time management, and written and verbal communication skills
- Bilingual fluency highly desirable (English + Spanish, Hmong, Somali or Karen)
- Proven ability to facilitate/drive group efforts to achieve measurable outcomes
- Demonstrated respect for and experience with culturally diverse communities
- Excellent professional etiquette, personal boundaries and ability to maintain confidentiality
- Detail orientation for understanding and maintaining compliance with complex regulations
- Flexible with ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, high-demand work environment
- Valid current driver’s license and good driving record
- Intermediate to advanced computer skills with Microsoft Office programs
