The Immigrant Learning Center (ILC) in Malden, MA, is hiring a full-time, Research Associate to its Public Education Institute team to augment its mission of informing Americans about immigrants and immigration in the U.S. The Research Associate will do original and secondary research projects in coordination with the Director, help create fact sheets and presentations, and broaden local and national partnerships in the immigrant integration and academic fields. The Research Associate reports to the Director of The ILC Public Education Institute and will work closely with a junior Research Assistant and the Communications department. This position is in-person, not remote. Foreign-born residents/students in the U.S. are encouraged to apply. Responsibilities:   

  • Produce original and secondary research determined collaboratively with the Director alongside a junior Research Assistant 
  • Collect and analyze data with an eye to data visualization for a non-academic audience  
  • Research, write and edit fact sheets, research-based articles, blog posts, infographics and explainers  
  • Present in panels, workshops and conferences  
  • Develop and strengthen external partnerships, helping expand the Institute’s local and national reach and depth of connections across sectors 
  • Help organize and host online and in-person activities, including collaborative initiatives with partners 
  • Seek out opportunities to publish, present and collaborate  
  • Coordinate projects with remote volunteers 
  • Strengthen overall project management of the Institute and coordination with other ILC departments and external partners  
  • Other duties as assigned  

Skills, Abilities, Competencies:  

  • U.S. work authorization, including Optional Practical Training; foreign-born U.S. residents/students encouraged to apply 
  • Proven track record of understanding and using research, with experience in disaggregating data an asset  
  • Comfort using data from different sources (e.g. Census, American Community Survey, Bureau of Labor Statistics, existing research)   
  • Proficiency in data manipulation, calculation and graphical display  
  • Exceptional written and oral communications skills  
  • Excellent project management skills, with a proven ability to take initiative and find creative solutions  
  • Ability to convey research in ways that are accessible to a wide range of audiences  
  • Ability to give and receive criticism constructively, work collaboratively, and meet tight deadlines under pressure  
  • A sense of humor, team spirit and ability to adapt to changing circumstances

The Immigrant Learning Center, Inc. (ILC) is a not-for-profit organization that gives immigrants a voice in three ways. The English Language Program provides free, year-round English classes to immigrant and refugee adults in Greater Boston to help them become successful workers, parents and community members. The ILC Public Education Institute informs Americans about immigrants and immigration in the U.S. The Institute for Immigration Research, a joint venture with George Mason University, conducts research on the economic contributions of immigrants.
