Clean Air is Hiring A Community Organizer
Clean Air; Organizing for Health and Justice is a membership based environmental justice organization that builds power by developing grassroots leaders who organize their communities to run and win Environmental Justice and public health campaigns in Western New York. Clean Air currently has over 200 dues paying members in working class communities and communities of color disproportionally impacted by environmental pollution and disinvestment.
In light of the current federal administration and shifting energy economy, the need to build power and resilience in communities historically cut out of decision making is more urgent than ever. Without the leadership and direction by communities most affected by injustice, policies and practices are often ineffective. Clean Air’s just transition organizing and environmental justice/labor partnerships have been highlighted as a national model by Grist, Bill Moyers, and Mother Jones. We see both the successful decommissioning and remediation of our coal plant, and the public investment in renewable generation as organizing opportunities to build power, advance climate justice, and demonstrate real life solutions to our changing energy economy.
The main responsibility of this position is to establish a new, member led, campaign team to address equitable public investment, and job creation in the renewable energy sector in Western New York. The community organizer will work in predominantly working class communities and communities of color in the City of Buffalo and the Tonawandas to build and support member organizing teams. The organizer will identify leaders through canvassing, one on one relationship building, and community meetings. The organizer will build the capacity of team member’s leadership and organizing abilities. The organizer will develop and facilitate community trainings to build leadership capacity of members, lead member teams through campaign planning and support members during campaign execution. This position is an opportunity to be involved at the ground floor on Clean Air’s newest campaign, and build the inaugural team to work to advance environmental and economic justice in Western New York.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Establish a campaign team to work at the intersections of race, class and economic and environmental justice
- Identify leaders through canvassing and community meetings
- Conduct one on one meetings with residents/leaders
- Collaborate with Clean Air staff and members to develop curriculum and execute leadership development workshops that align with the needs of the campaign. The goal is to develop leaders who have the knowledge, skills, and self-interest to build power.
- Collaborate in joint visioning, organizing meetings, and actions with organized labor and clergy groups
- Coordinate and facilitate community meetings, trainings and strategy sessions
- Work with Clean Air staff and members to support and align the work of an ongoing campaign team organizing for a just energy transition
- Collaborate with staff and members to continue to grow a culture of fundraising within the organization. Fundraising responsibilities include member recruitment and occasional special events support
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build genuine, long-term relationships that move leaders to action
- Experience establishing and developing campaign teams and supporting member lead decisions and actions
- Demonstrates the ability to work across lines of difference, with a nuanced understanding of systemic oppressions race/ class/ gender/ ability.
- Active listener, with experience in group decision making processes
- Access to reliable transportation, meaning the ability to get to many neighborhoods in City of Buffalo and to and from the Tonawanda’s – sometimes multiple times a day
- Experience organizing in communities of color
- Flexibility to work one or two evenings a week, and occasionally (once a month) on weekends
- This is a part-time, exempt position with potential opportunity to go full time. Working 20 hours a week, starting $20 an hour. This position is currently for 1 year, with the potential of being permanent depending on funding.
