Organization Overview:

The Diller-Quaile School of Music, founded 100 years ago by pianists Angela Diller and Elizabeth Quaile, is a vibrant not-for-profit community music school on the Upper East Side of Manhattan providing Early Childhood, Instrumental and Vocal, Adult, Teacher Training, and Community Programs. Diller-Quaile’s mission is to develop the innate musicality in each individual, inspiring participation for a lifetime. Curricula emanate primarily from international folk music and classical music. In-person and live, remote programs are offered. The Diller-Quaile School of Music is accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Precollegiate Arts Schools; is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music; and is an approved Sponsor of Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) by the NYS Education Department.

Position:

The Diller-Quaile School of Music is seeking a highly effective Chief Financial Officer (CFO) with a track record of managing multiple responsibilities within a school or organizational setting on both a macro and micro level. The CFO reports to the Executive Director and works under the guidance of the School’s Treasurer and Board of Directors. The CFO serves as an active member of the senior management team helping to develop and implement the School’s vision and mission. The CFO works onsite at the School. This leadership position is full-time and is classified as exempt.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Provide complete oversight of all fiscal functions, including accounting, accounting systems, IT, facilities management, budgeting, policies & procedures, insurance, employee benefits and human resource management. 
  • Manage and monitor investments and the endowment, working closely with endowment advisors, investment committees and various funds.
  • Ensure the financial statements & records are prepared and maintained in accordance with GAAP. 
  • Oversee cash flow management. 
  • Work directly with the external auditors during the annual audit to prepare the audited financial statements and maintain responsibility for ensuring internal controls are effective in both design and operation.  
  • Monitor and report financial performance to directors of programs. Prepare proposed and revised budgets. These budgets are presented to both the Financial Sustainability Committee and the Board of Directors. Board and finance meetings occur a minimum of five times per fiscal year. 
  • Serve as primary school contact for all contractual matters.  
  • Directly oversee and supervise the finance staff, front office receptionist, and superintendents.  Maintain strong relationships with the School’s bank, investment firm, and IT provider, as well as all facility vendors. 
  • The CFO is highly visible within the School and School communities (staff, faculty, parents, donors, students, community) and must maintain a high degree of integrity, honesty, and respect for all peoples.

Qualifications:

  • Certified Public Accountant required
  • Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge and Raiser’s Edge
  • Experience managing investments/endowments
  • Minimum 10+ years in financial leadership roles serving the non-profit sector
  • Must work onsite at the School, five days per week
  • Ability to negotiate contracts, understanding the benefits and risks of contractual arrangements
  • Commitment to results; “can-do" mindset; outstanding problem-solving ability
  • Experience working with external auditors (audit, tax and employee benefit plan returns)
  • Effective motivational and staff leadership abilities
  • Excellent analytical, communication and presentation skills with strong emphasis on Board and senior management presentations
  • Integrity with personal sense of accountability
