The Wildwoods Foundation is seeking a dedicated educator with excellent organizational and project management skills to serve as our Program Coordinator. This is a part-time/flex-time job, with benefits and opportunity for growth. Reports to the Executive Director.

Organization Description:

With a slightly different focus than traditional environmental education organizations, all of our programs are built around our philosophy of "Building Community by Exploring Nature." The intent of our programs is that participants learn a lesson of nature that they can apply in a social context in their everyday lives: in school, at home and in their neighborhood. Or, as we like to say, "It's not about us saving nature. It’s about nature saving us.”

Our programs take place across the Los Angeles region, in schools and in parks. They include:

  • A Drop in the Bucket – a water education program for 4 – 6 grade. Served 35,000+ students since launch.
  • Full Circle – intensive 7-week ecology program for 5th grade.
  • Seeds of STEM – Nature-based science education for early childhood.
  • Oakgrove – Student-led human relations program for high school.
  • Paseo – Monthly field trips for the families served by the Magnolia Community Initiative (see below).

The Wildwoods Foundation is based at the Magnolia Place Family Center and is a member agency in the Magnolia Community Initiative (MCI), a collective-impact project of 70+ agencies and organizations that serve a 500-block catchment area sandwiched between downtown Los Angeles and the USC campus. 


The schedule is part-time/flex-time, based on demand, ranging from 15 to 35 (or more) hours. Our schedule reflects the Los Angeles school calendar. Fall is the heavy season. Two weeks off @ Christmas. Very light summer. Occasional weekend and evening work. Moderate telecommuting possible. Local travel (school visits) frequently required. Mileage is paid.


  • Have experience coordinating outdoor or environmental education programs (or similar) with schools.
  • Have knowledge and understanding of basic scientific principles, especially ecology and regional habitats. 
  • Have an understanding of Earth Sciences at the elementary and middle-school level. 
  • Be familiar with the Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core.
  • Possess knowledge of regional environmental and socio-economic/eco-justice issues. 
  • Be flexible and comfortable with managing last-minute schedule changes.
  • Be comfortable with working on the move.
  • Be okay with after-hours communication as needed.
  • Possess excellent project management skills.
  • Possess excellent organizational skills.
  • Possess excellent communication skills, particularly phone and email.
  • Be comfortable working with and developing budgets.
  • Have reliable access to email (mobile internet connection) and cell phone during business hours, Monday – Friday, with some weekend availability required.
  • Possess a working computer.
  • Be familiar with the Google suite of apps (Contacts, Calendar, Drive) as well as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
  • Be comfortable with online scheduling platforms.
  • Have reliable transportation and the ability to transport program materials. (Bikes don’t count. Sorry.)
  • Have a clean driving record.
  • Possess a healthy sense of humor.
  • Possess the ability to work independently, maintain a “big picture” perspective and self-monitor program support needs. (In other words, work alone, think ahead, be prepared for the next task at hand – including maintaining all necessary resources, materials and supplies.)


  • Formal classroom or school administration experience with a working knowledge of the school environment and culture. Credentialed teachers particularly preferred.
  • Experience managing staff and/or volunteers.
  • Familiarity with systems thinking.
  • Fluency in Spanish.


  • Scheduling both schools (clients) and staff.
  • School outreach and follow-up: mail, email, phone.
  • Maintaining all program materials and supplies. 
  • Collecting and tracking participant data.
  • Collecting evaluation data and serving as a primary point of contact with the schools and community.
  • Visiting schools and program sites as needed. (Mileage is paid.)
  • Staff recruitment and training.
  • Manage program staff HR issues, including approval of time sheets via online portal.
  • Working with MCI partners and developing place-based programming at the Magnolia Place Family Center.
  • Filling in for program staff as needed (must know curriculum).
  • Participate in grant and proposal review to provide feedback and input.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor with clientele (teachers, school staff and administrators) as well as staff, volunteers and board of directors.
  • Participate in additional organization activities, including community relations, outreach, and fundraising.
  • Other duties as assigned.
