Who we are:  The Center for Leadership and Justice is a 170 year old progressive social justice organization that has won numerous neighborhood campaigns in the last two years, including a nationally recognized No More Slumlords campaign. With a strong foundation of grassroots leaders with significant organizing experience, CLJ successfully launched an interfaith congregation-based (broad based) organization called Greater Hartford Interfaith Action Alliance (GHIAA) in October, 2019, with 35 dues paying institutions (including Jewish, Christian and Muslim congregations). Today GHIAA is comprised of 41 dues paying institutions. In the last year GHIAA and allies have won campaigns on clean slate, repealing welfare liens, and declaring racism a public health crisis.

Our team is interested in filling this full time position with an experienced faith based, broad based, or community organizer who is skilled at developing relationships with diverse communities and organizations. You will join a staff of four organizers as they work with congregations, neighborhoods, and other committed organizations to develop and implement practical and winnable solutions to specific social justice issues. Our current issues includes housing, education, gun violence, criminal justice and healthcare.

Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a collaborative team of organizers with CLJ’s executive director/lead organizer to guide the work of GHIAA.

  • Build relationships with clergy and lay core team members from a variety of religious institutions to engage in the work of faith-based organizing.
  • Train leaders in the principles of organizing.
  • Participate personally in on-going anti-racism training and engage GHIAA leaders in anti-racism training.
  • Plan and execute turnout for public actions to compel decision makers to advance issue campaigns
  • Build financial sustainability by ensuring dues support among member congregations.
  • Maintain a disciplined routine of weekly individual meetings.
