Lowell School is seeking a dynamic individual for the position of Primary School Academic Technologist beginning in the 2018-2019 school year. Ideal candidates for this position will be teachers or former teachers who are particularly enthusiastic about all aspects of deploying technology in the Primary grades (K-5) in a progressive school environment. The candidate should have strong technical skills and an aptitude to learn quickly and identify creative implementations of technology to improve instruction. Lowell is a technology-rich environment, using a multitude of devices, including Chromebooks, iPads, Mac laptops, and Windows laptops. This position reports to the Primary School Director and works closely with the Director of Technology. This is an 10+ month position that requires the minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education, educational technology, or a related field, as well as teaching experience.


The Academic Technologist will work to develop and implement a vision for innovation, academic technology, and instructional design. This individual should have an extensive and successful background of teaching in lower school (K-5) classrooms. The candidate will typically focus on the areas of technology, engineering, design thinking, robotics, graphic design, and programming/coding, and will have experience managing instructional technology or curricular innovation in an educational organization.


Key responsibilities include:


  • Teach grades K-5 in technology use, G Suite (Google education products), coding, robotics, research, typing skills, iPad apps, and other areas that support the curriculum, having extensive knowledge, experience, and successful implementation of instructional technology in the classroom.
  • Plan with classroom teachers, librarians, and specialists to design technology-integrated learning experiences that foster critical thinking and problem solving for student technology knowledge development.
  • Make purposeful and appropriate lesson plans that support the curriculum.
  • Use a variety/range of student learning modalities in each lesson and use differentiated instruction within those lessons to provide a successful student learning experience.
  • Assist teachers in using technology effectively to provide rigorous, relevant, and engaging learning experiences for all students. The candidate will work with faculty to support their use of technology in the delivery of curricula through a variety of instructional methods.
  • Make recommendations for technology and pedagogy that support curricular and administrative goals of the school. Stay abreast of current technologies, pedagogies, and curriculum trends while working collaboratively to implement those initiatives that further enhance the strategic goals of the school.
  • Design, deliver, and oversee major professional development and growth experiences for faculty in areas of technology integration, curriculum enhancement, and instructional design.
  • Provide basic technical support to teachers and students.
  • Spend time during the summer working with the Technology Office to prepare for the upcoming school year.


Qualifications include, but are not limited to:


  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, to facilitate effective communication with students, parents, colleagues, and supervisors.
  • Passion, integrity, a positive attitude, a mission-driven approach, and initiative.
  • Strong leadership, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience teaching the lower grades (K-5).
  • Knowledge of the educational technology industry, or previous working experience in an Ed Tech company.
  • Flexibility and an ability to solve technical problems quickly.
  • Proven ability to facilitate workshops and deliver presentations to groups, ensuring participant learning and mastery of content.
  • Comfortable using Mac, Windows, and iOS devices and operating systems.
  • Knowledge of G Suite, Office products, and educational software, such as Sketchup, Scratch, etc. 


A bachelor’s degree in education, technology, or a related field is a minimum requirement, although a graduate degree in instructional technology or education is highly desirable. The primary focus of this role is to enrich and support learning while strengthening the technology skills of students, teachers, and staff. The Academic Technologist will also perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.
