The Children’s Museum of Manhattan is embarking upon the most exciting journey in its 45-year history: a move to a Landmark Building overlooking Central Park. This transformative move will double the size of the Museum, enabling it to meet public demand for visitation and special programs that outstrip the current facility.

With a projected move date in 2022, the Museum is looking for a seasoned professional to serve as Chief Operating Officer (COO) and to be part of the senior management team. The COO will spearhead efforts to improve the current operation of the Museum and to plan for and execute the operation of the new facility. The COO will work with the Executive Director, the Board of Directors, the Deputy Director of Development and other senior staff to vision for the new museum, manage project planning, financial oversight, and overall excellence of the daily operation and to participate in design and construction decisions of the new facility to insure dedicated attention to operational issues and earned income. The COO will collaborate on developing and aligning mission, facility design, earned income and contributed income.

We seek a team oriented professional with experience in museums or related institution that has undergone rapid growth. 


The Opportunity


Reporting to the Executive Director, the COO will supervise finance, facility operations, all earned income programs, scheduling, institutional planning, human resources, IT, visitor services, the exhibitions department and the programs departments. In partnership with the Executive Director, senior staff and Board committees, the COO will refine and clarify institutional goals—ensuring mission alignment—and then develop implementation plans to achieve goals at the board level.

Key Responsibilities

·        Developing a productive partnership with the Executive team.

·        Becoming a strategic partner to the Deputy Director for Development to create a comprehensive understanding of programming as it relates to fundraising strategies, and ensuring long- and short-term institutional sustainability through the operational and program budgets.

·        Overseeing the full range of finance-related functions including capital and operating budget development, audit, compliance, internal controls, vendor management, lender relationship stewardship, and debt management.

·        Oversee the creative departments, including the exhibitions and program departments, to insure alignment with mission and business goals.

·        Leading the articulation of what excellence embodies and then developing a means to achieve and sustain this throughout all functional areas and also in a manner that serves the multiple publics.

·        Optimizing technology across the museum to increase organizational efficiency, effectiveness, information accessibility and accuracy, and identifying needed areas for investment.

·        Building and institutionalizing all HR functions including, but not limited to staffing (recruiting, hiring, onboarding), staff development/training, performance evaluations, compensation, safety and health, legal compliance, and respectful advancement of diversity/equity/inclusiveness efforts.

The Candidate

Relationship Building

·        Proficiency in working with a wide range of individuals at all levels of the organization

·        Nurturing relationships between and among individuals and ability to discreetly and adeptly resolve any conflicts that may arise

·        Ability to form a productive and sustained relationship with Executive Director and the members of the leadership team

Financial and Operational Expertise

·        Experience in running a modern, compliant, nonprofit finance department

·        Proven experience in budgeting (capital, operating, and programmatic), financial forecasting, compliance, and accounting

·        Foster an institutional competency in building budgets with input from program staff and then communicating budget performance on a regular basis

·        Ability to simultaneously balance the strategic vision with day-to-day minutiae while ensuring positive financial outcomes in both the short- and long-term

·        Maximizing current and projected earned revenue streams

·        Ensuring necessary and appropriate staffing, technology, and software to capture data that will be used as a tool for advancing the mission

·        Dexterity in interfacing with legal counsel (numerous)


·        Experience building, tracking, and reporting on organizational and programmatic outcomes

·        Ability to use data to build compelling arguments to make informed and objective decisions


Capital Project Experience

·        Experience successfully advancing large-scale capital projects, particularly in the New York City market or an ability to rapidly learn the particular idiosyncrasies of the NYC capital project environment

·        Indefatigable spirit when dealing with bureaucracy and ability to develop creative and expedient mechanisms to resolve impasses

·        Ability to anticipate management issues that may impede the project’s success

Communicator and Facilitator

·        Mentoring and training staff as needed, providing ongoing performance feedback in a constructive manner, and maximizing relationships

·        Fostering open vertical and horizontal communications within CMOM to create a supportive and positively engaged work environment

·        Seeking out and facilitating opportunities to build and empower teams

·        Ability to present complex information in a clear manner both verbally and in writing
