Hack the Hood (HTH) seeks a contractor to serve as a Producer to produce, prototype and test an online video "mentor matrix" library that can be used in the context of relationship-based career coaching to enhance youth knowledge about tech careers and confidence in pursuing them. The contractor will work with the Chief Innovation Officer, Hack the Hood staff and a team of consultants to create this career exploration tool that will lift up the successes of professionals of color for youth to see. This tool is a new way to engage industry in the training and mentoring of a more inclusive future workforce. The video library will be part of a larger toolkit, that includes an online curriculum, research report and white paper. The finalized toolkit will be published online and shared with the wider field of workforce development agencies, community based organizations and tech companies. The contractor will bring at least 4 years of experience, but will also participate in a user centered design training with the wider team to co-create a design plan for the project. 

The role will include participating in a user centered design training with the wider team to co-create a design plan for the project. Creating storyboards, writing scripts, scouting talent, organizing shoot logistics and working closely with the videographer to finalize edits as needed. Other duties include project managing the non video related aspects of the project including: research report, focus groups and marketing plan, remain on track and completed by the deadline. The successful candidate will have experience producing/publishing video content, creating media, digital storytelling and creating online content that challenges the dominant narrative of communities of color in the media. Successful candidates will have a zest for using tech as a tool for social change, social media, Google Docs and other tools. This is a position that requires meetings and co-working in Oakland, California, and is not suitable for a remote worker.

Scope of Work

  • Work with the team to plan and then storyboard, schedule and produce an online video library of 7-10 video shorts, 10 minutes in length each
  • Create storyboards for each short, along with scripts, and provide final edits to the videographer
  • Create timescales and ensure project stays within the designated budget
  • Liaise with participants and the creative team to ensure projects run smoothly
  • Present work to Chief Innovation Officer and work together to ensure great product outcomes
  • Participate in design feedback sessions with youth participants and team
  • Collaborate with other team members and delegate tasks accordingly
  • Structure projects and devise efficient processes and sign offs
  • Support documentation and writing up of work and content as part of both internal documentation and outward facing materials including: website copy, curriculum and white paper
  • Provide knowledgeable creative input to all campaigns


  • Minimum of 4 years experience as content producer or media maker
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • A full knowledge of digital production processes
  • An in-depth understanding of both technical and creative processes
  • A pro-active approach to new creative opportunities
  • Significant industry experience
  • Impressive communication skills and an enthusiastic approach to liaising with clients
  • Demonstrated ability to balance multiple priorities in a changing environment
  • Experience building and maintaining relationships and partnerships with community organizations and local small business and corporations
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Good communication and presentation skills
