Founded in 1999, BUILD’s mission is to use entrepreneurship to ignite the potential of youth in under-resourced communities and equip them for high school, college and career success. BUILD’s unique program offers students a four-year entrepreneurship experience designed to develop 21st Century Skills and motivate student engagement in school. Starting in 9th grade, BUILD students work with their peers and community mentors to develop business ideas, pitch to funders and launch real businesses. As students journey through high school and continue to grow their businesses, BUILD helps them explore college and career options, and assists students with the college application process. Entrepreneurship is the hook – college, career, and life success are the goals.


BUILD currently serves approximately 2,000 high school students annually at programs located in the San Francisco Bay Area, Washington DC, New York City and Boston.

Position Summary:

Reporting directly to the Boston Regional Executive Director, the Program Director will lead the implementation of the BUILD’s four-year and digital/hybrid program serving 300+ high school students in our partner schools. They will maintain and develop school partnerships as well as manage program staff. The Program Director will provide instructional and programmatic leadership, training and accountability. The Program Director will cultivate a culture of teamwork, excellence, collaboration and learning among existing and future BUILD sites and community partners. The Program Director will ensure that each site is operating effectively and meeting the needs of students in alignment with BUILD’s mission and values, as well as Boston’s strategic vision. This role serves as the lead for balancing program quality, consistency, and student-centered innovation.

 

The Boston Program Director will join BUILD at an exciting time in our organization’s development. Enhancements to our curriculum through digital and in-person offerings --- as well as business model initiatives such as satellite partnerships --- positions BUILD Boston to expand and deepen our impact in the Greater Boston area and beyond. Qualified candidates will be those who are excited about playing a key role in Boston as we scale our program to advance social justice.


Position Responsibilities:


Staff Management and Development (30%)

  • Manage a team of full-time, part-time and temporary staff to meet organizational outcomes
  • Work with the National Impact and Organizational Learning team to provide staff development opportunities and continued training for Boston’s program staff and adult volunteers (mentors/coaches)
  • Foster a healthy and high performing culture within the Boston region, across regions and with the National team


Regional Operations and Growth (15%)

  • Lead program operations for the Boston site, including financial management of student businesses
  • Manage regional program budget
  • Manage school-based Incubator spaces for student programming
  • In partnership with the Regional Executive Director and Boston Board, explore avenues to continue to grow the program in Greater Boston
  • Work with the Regional Executive Director to promote the BUILD brand throughout Greater Boston

 

Program Implementation, Evaluation & Development (40%)

  • Lead and oversee the regional implementation of BUILD’s program, curriculum and events to ensure organizational outcomes are met
  • Ensure high quality execution and delivery of the BUILD in-person, digital and hybrid curriculum across partner schools (Grades 9-12)
  • Inspire and lead the development and implementation of a shared vision for the comprehensive use of technology to support a digital-age education that includes information literacy, programming, design thinking, and innovative learning environments
  • Implement BUILD’s mentoring program, including mentor recruitment, training and support
  • Plan and implement recruiting and retention strategies to maintain student enrollment
  • Design, modify and enhance curriculum to keep program model relevant
  • Collaborate with teachers to ensure curriculum modifications are streamlined and shared
  • Adapt curriculum to adjust to virtual learning
  • Provide guidance and support to team members as they implement and innovate within the BUILD model for continuous improvement
  • Foster a regional culture of inquiry by regularly gathering and analyzing data to guide regional strategy and decisions
  • Supervise regional data collection processes; Utilize data to identify promising practices, celebrate successes, surface areas of improvement and recommend strategies to promote organizational growth across the region and nationally
  • Contribute to the refinement of program elements and evaluation methods to improve organizational outcomes


Partnerships and Collaborations (15%)

  • Develop and manage partnerships with district leaders and school administrators
  • Collaborate with partners in the identification and selection of BUILD teachers
  • Secure and manage community partners to provide staff trainings and student support for college and career readiness
  • Work with the Regional Executive Director and development team to communicate program results to funders and other key stakeholders 

Candidate Requirements:

  • 5+ years of classroom teaching experience or direct service working with youth
  • 3+ years of successful professional staff management experience
  • Previous experience with experiential education, entrepreneurship, workforce development and/or college access preferred
  • High cultural competence, with experience serving diverse populations and students from under-resourced, urban communities
  • Proven successful track record of recruiting, training and managing culturally diverse, high performing professional staff
  • Effective coach that enables others to develop their skills rather than offering all the answers; Experience training and coaching teachers or adults
  • Demonstrated success of leading students or teams through adoption of new digital tools to foster deeper learning or engagement
  • Ability to effectively use technology to support teachers, adult mentors and students
  • Strong critical thinking skills with a clear understanding of and comfort with using data to inform programming and performance
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proven ability to think strategically and execute on multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Self-starter, thrives in fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • Competent in the use of G-suite, Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and video conferencing; experience with a CRM a plus (BUILD uses Salesforce)
  • Familiarity and experience navigating the Boston public school district a plus
  • BA or BS degree in education or youth development, or related field; or transferable life experience.
  • Spanish fluency a plus

Position Details:

  • Location: Boston
  • Frequent travel between local sites is required; Occasional travel with students is required during the year for out-of-state college visits and other activities [BUILD staff are currently working remote during the COVID-19 pandemic]
  • Typical site operation hours are Monday-Thursday, approximately 10am-6pm; Fridays 9am-5 pm. Occasional evening and weekend hours are required
  • Full time/Exempt
