Position Summary: Balance our Tax Code (BOTC) is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization that brings together a coalition of organizations dedicated to cleaning up WA State’s upside-down tax code. BOTC is currently preparing a coalition-driven advocacy strategy for the 2021 legislative session and looking to strengthen its organizational infrastructure over the next 9-12 months. To that end, BOTC is seeking to hire an Interim Managing Director who will provide leadership for the organization from November 2020 to June 2021. The person in this position will work an average of 40 hours per week. Must be willing and able to work some evening and weekend hours, particularly during the legislative session (Jan - Apr 2021) and must have access to the internet for remote work. Candidates can be located anywhere within Washington state. Position will be fulfilled remotely at least until all of Washington state reaches Stage 4 of the COVID-19 reopening plan set by the Governor. 

Position Responsibilities: 

Organizational Development and Board Management 

  • Staff the BOTC Board and support initiatives to grow and strengthen Board performance 
  • Participate in a twice-monthly check-in with BOTC board leadership 
  • Assess existing organizational assets, infrastructure, and systems and bring proposals to the Board for review and approval 
  • Implement approved changes and additions to existing structures and practices

Coalition Management 

  • Lead on development of engaging monthly coalition meeting agendas, speakers, and content 
  • Work with BOTC board leadership on agenda setting and meeting planning o Staff BOTC coalition meetings and manage internal and external communications to and from coalition members 
  • Meet 1:1 with new or prospective coalition members 

Cross-coalition collaboration 

  • Work closely with All In, the Working Families Tax Credit Coalition, and Fuse Communications Hub to continue cross-coalition partnership building 
  • Convene 3-6 meetings between these coalitions to build cross-coalition relationship-building and a unified process and strategy to revenue advocacy across tables

Legislative organizing and action 

  • Work with Legislative Committee Chair to facilitate weekly lobbying meetings with the Legislative Committee and weekly coalition update calls to share coalition-wide updates on revenue 
  • Work with the Revenue Communicators group to support earned, reactive, and proactive media on new revenue 
  • Manage and direct coalition calls to action such as, but not limited to, legislative hearings and briefings, internal coalition communications (such as regular session updates), member organization briefings, social media, and action alerts toolkits 

Fundraising & Financial Management 

  • In cooperation with the Board Treasurer, support day-to-day financial management. 
  • Oversee the preparation of regular financial reports and other necessary tracking and reporting following sound accounting principles, and ensure the Board is well-informed. 
  • Work with Board in hiring of a development consultant to lead fundraising strategy 

Reports to: Chair of the Balance our Tax Code (BOTC) Board of Directors

Compensation: $7,500 per month (salaried). Health benefits will be provided.
