Morning Volunteer Supervisor

ROOTS Young Adult Shelter builds community and fosters dignity through access to essential services and a safe place to sleep for young adults experiencing homelessness.


POSITION SUMMARY:  The Morning Volunteer Supervisor is responsible for supervising 2-3 weekly teams of Morning, Morning+ and Overnight volunteers. This includes training, support, evaluation and development of these team members. This position will work a minimum of 2 morning shifts per week, from approximately 6:15am-8:45am (Sunday through Friday; 7:15am-9:45am on Saturdays), and an average of 2-3 hours per week outside of shelter. Currently, we are hiring one candidate to fill the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday Morning shifts.


Responsibility: The Volunteer Supervisor is responsible for training and coaching ROOTS Young Adult Shelter volunteers, in conjunction with the Volunteer Services Manager and other staff. These duties will be conducted in accordance with the ROOTS Vision and Mission, agency policies and procedures, as well as relevant federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations.

Specific responsibilities include:

o  Supervise teams of 8-12 volunteers per shift

o  Train volunteers to perform shelter tasks and assign tasks

o  Onboard new volunteers, providing detailed overview of shelter operations

o  Check in with each volunteer during each shift to provide volunteers with individualized logistical and emotional support

o  Lead debrief meetings at the end of each shift, including facilitation of scenario discussions and mini-trainings

o  Coordinate with and train meal team volunteers to ensure that they have enough support and supplies to prepare meals for 45 guests; ensure volunteers are able to accurately complete kitchen inventory each shift

o  Create scenario discussion or training topics to be facilitated during opening meetings, on a monthly basis

o  Ensure that guests leave shelter on-time at 8am and that shelter clean-up is completed by 8:30am

o  Review rules and expectations for both guests and volunteers

o  Assist with conflict de-escalation and rule enforcement, as needed

o  Coach volunteers on conflict de-escalation strategies and techniques, as well as rule enforcement

o  Organize and maintain shelter supplies and donations, as needed

o  Track and monitor volunteer schedule for assigned night(s) in shelter to ensure sufficient coverage; adjust the schedule when volunteers call out and work with Volunteer Services Manager to find additional coverage for shifts that are short staffed

o  Complete service learning evaluations and letters of recommendation for volunteers, as needed

o  Assist with facilitation of required volunteer trainings, when requested

o  Other duties as assigned and/or necessary


Authority: The Volunteer Supervisor supervisors all ROOTS volunteer positions. This includes support, training, evaluation and development of these team members in concert with the Volunteer Services Manager, Program Supervisors, and other staff.

Accountability: The Volunteer Supervisor is accountable to and is supervised by the Volunteer Services Manager.

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

-Complete required training shifts in shelter program.

-Attend all required shelter staff and volunteer trainings.

-Participation in ongoing and outside of ROOTS trainings as assigned.

-Provide proof of CPR/First Aid Certification and Food Handler’s Card within 60 days of hire.


QUALIFICATIONS

-Must demonstrate ability to work effectively in a volunteer-driven, anti-racist, harm-reduction, equity-oriented service organization.

-Experience working with young adults or homeless and under-served groups, including demonstrated ability to positively engage with people in need

-Must have highly developed communication skills, including demonstrated ability to communicate with a wide variety of people, including those who may be experiencing serious mental illness or who may be intoxicated, and effectively manage conflict

-Strong interpersonal and facilitation skills; demonstrated ability to train and coach quality volunteers

-Exceptional organizational skills: well-disciplined, reliable, self-starter, able to work under pressure of shifting priorities and deadlines.

-Solid understanding of issues related to systemic racism, poverty, and homelessness.

-Ability to maintain a regular schedule and proactively communicate with colleagues and supervisor in advance about changes to that schedule


This is a part-time hourly position, an average 7-12 hours per week. Starting hourly rate is $17.25.
