The Center for Court Innovation is a non-profit organization that works to create a more effective and humane justice system by performing original research and helping launch reforms by guiding justice innovators, nationally and internationally. The Center creates operating projects that have been documented to reduce the use of jail and prison, assist victims of crime, and strengthen communities.

The Center’s Data Analytics and Applied Research Team (DAAR) is seeking a Senior Research and Data Associate to carry out, coordinate, and supervise data management, data analysis, and research projects for our pretrial Supervised Release Program (SRP) work in New York City (the Bronx, Brooklyn and Staten Island). This position offers an opportunity to coordinate and conduct on-the-ground research and data analysis on several innovative court projects and, more generally, to manage program outcomes and policy implications through data tracking and analysis. The successful candidate must bring a real interest in this work, along with knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methodology. The role requires a strong preexisting skill set in using statistical software and working with relational databases. For more information about the Center’s operating programs, please visit www.courtinnovation.org/programs.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Extract, code, clean, and analyze data from large databases;
  • Oversee and/or produce statistical reports and analysis (e.g., regarding program volume, service linkages, or compliance rates) – both recurring and ad hoc;
  • Directly supervise Research and Data Associates on staff;
  • Work collaboratively on a small team within the larger department; coordinate with three site-dedicated DAAR colleagues, as needed;
  • Work closely with team management to streamline, document, and standardize data management and analysis practices across the three SRP sites;
  • Serve as principal investigator (PI) on research projects and coordinate with external research partners;
  • Assist senior management on large-scale projects;
  • Oversee fieldwork (including training and oversight of research assistants);
  • Oversee IRB submissions;
  • Conduct and/or oversee proficient analytic and writing work in all stages of the research process;
  • Assist senior management on designing and authoring research and funding proposals;
  • Work with project directors and program staff to set priorities for research and data collection;
  • Coordinate and work with program staff to write funding proposals, and plan and implement new programs;
  • Coordinate with development staff and fiscal staff on contracts and data deliverables;
  • Oversee creation of and amendments to data tracking and reporting tools with operations and technology departments;
  • Support the SRP DAAR team and program staff in our upcoming case management system transition (proprietary Oracle database to Salesforce);
  • Identify and critically assess project progress against benchmarks;
  • Disseminate findings and data-informed policy implications to policymaker and practitioner audiences, as well as researchers; and
  • Additional relevant tasks, as needed.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a Master’s Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree plus 3-5 years’ relevant research and data experience, preferably as a criminal justice researcher. The candidate should have prior supervisory/management experience. Candidate must be a skilled communicator (written and oral) and able to interact effectively and maintain relationships with members of the judiciary, court staff, community-based organizations, criminal justice personnel, and members of the public. Experience using statistical software syntax (R, SAS, Python, Stata, SPSS etc.) is required (experience with R is preferred). Experience using advanced quantitative and qualitative methods and querying large databases using SQL (or other programming languages used to extract and manipulate data) is required. Experience using data visualization software (e.g., Tableau) and familiarity with Salesforce is a plus. Knowledge of and strong interest in the justice system is a must.

Position Location: Midtown, NY with regular travel to the Center’s Brooklyn sites operating the Supervised Release Program.
