ABOUT YLEAD: YLEAD’s goals are achieving racial economic justice by building the leadership, organizing and career exposure in community development of 55-65 South Los Angeles youth of LAUSD public high schools located in  Historic South Central, South Park, Vermont-Slauson and Vermont Square communities. 

YLEAD engages the youth through an after-school program that addresses issues of income inequality affecting their families and communities. We do this by implementing a train-the-trainer model to educate the youth about community and economic development issues in South Central LA and organizing them to get involved civically by sharing their learning with others in their

communities. The core program elements include: coaching and mentorship; dual enrollment in and successful completion of a Community Economic Development college course at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College; working on a community service learning project; leadership development training; supporting a school-based group; and support community and civic engagement in

collaboration with community partners.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:  The Youth Justice Manager (YJPM) manages the activities of CDTech’s YLEAD Program (Youth Leaders Active, Empowered & Diverse) ensuring alignment with CDTech’s overall mission and approach to Civic and Community Engagement. 

We are seeking an individual who will thrive in a mission-driven environment that places a high value on collaboration both internally and externally with youth, resident leaders and community

partners.  This position requires an experienced racial justice advocate who is dedicated to securing social and economic justice of South LA youth with particular focus on Black youth, as well

as systems-involved youth . A successful Candidate, working collaboratively with colleagues, must be able to create strategies to advance our social justice agenda, organize priority youth and actively engage with community partners on policy and resource campaigns that positively impact the lives of low income communities of color. This  position also requires establishing partnerships with school administration, local service organizations and other youth organizing and leadership development programs in the region to implement the YLEAD program and advance CDTech’s mission.  The YJP Manager will be providing supervision, capacity building and mentoring to staff, interns and youth program participants to ensure success of the YLEAD program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

●       Management: On-board, supervise and build capacity of staff, interns and program participants to ensure critical elements of the YLEAD program are implemented. Monitor, problem solve, redirect as needed; and, track and develop progress reports.

●       Recruitment: Develop and maintain a dynamic referral network to increase recruitment and retention of Black and systems-involved youth in the program.

●       Leadership Development: Provide capacity building trainings, mentor and coach staff,

interns and residents to facilitate their development in carrying out their leadership

responsibilities and taking action in community development opportunities and issues that affect their communities.

●       Collaborative Partners:  Develop and maintain working relationships with nonprofit/public/private sector partners and institutions including Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, FamilySource Centers; South Los Angeles high schools; and, local small businesses. Support CDTech’s leadership role in multiple South Los Angeles collaborations.

●       Planning, Assessment and Evaluation:  Work collaboratively with Supervisor, other Senior Managers and program staff, to develop program and implementation strategies and work plans to meet both organizational/collaborative priorities and achieve grant deliverables identified

within the scope of the position’s performance objectives. Collect data, track and report progress as indicated and demonstrate accountability and compliance in implementing timely grant

deliverables.

●       Aligning to CDTech’s mission: Plan, support and coordinate with Civic and Community Engagement Team to align YLEAD’s work to the larger CDTech mission and vision.  Support other CDTech strategies, programs and projects to improve social and economic conditions of

South LA communities.

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:

●        This position requires previous leadership in community engagement, grant management, intern/volunteer supervision and report writing.

●       Commitment to and alignment with CDTech's mission and core values.

●       Accountable to results-based leadership development; demonstrated ability to prioritize, set goals and track results on multiple projects/programs/priorities simultaneously, meeting frequent

deadlines.

●       Knowledge of and demonstrated ability to work with South Los Angeles’s diverse populations and non-profit, public and private partners; ability to create and maintain a positive, effective

resident/participant/volunteer experience.

●       Strong training, facilitation and public speaking skills.

●       Ability to bring new ideas and networks to the organization, listen and incorporate insight from team members and maintain a flexible, positive attitude toward testing new initiatives and/or expanding existing programs into new opportunities.

●       Availability to work some evenings and weekends; must have a valid Driver’s License and own

reliable, insured form of transportation for local travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

Have the ability to physically be out in the field (community/neighborhood streets), conduct door-to-door outreach and engagement efforts, large-scale neighborhood/school outreach including commuting to and from neighborhoods and sites; requires extensive walking, climbing/descending

stairs along with standing in the targeted areas (outdoor/indoor) of South LA and other communities as assigned; light lifting of boxes and equipment up to 50 pounds, carrying up and down stairs as well as level surfaces; setting up and moving tables and chairs and setting up equipment within the training/meeting space; prolonged holding of video/audio recording devices and still cameras; climbing step ladder to hang banners; cleaning up event and

meeting sites.
