Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) is one of the largest public defense providers in the United States. BDS provides innovative, multi-disciplinary, and client-centered criminal, family, and immigration defense, as well as civil legal services, social work support and advocacy, for tens of thousands of clients in Brooklyn every year. BDS represents clients who have diverse, complex and multi-faceted needs in a high volume and very fast-paced setting.

BDS’s Immigration Practice is organized into three teams: Padilla, Youth and Communities, and the New York Immigrant Family Unity Project (NYIFUP) Team. Our Immigration Unit’s “Padilla” team advises criminal defense colleagues and clients, helping to devise strategies to minimize the immigration impact of our clients’ criminal and family court cases. Additionally, the Padilla and Youth and Communities teams screen clients for relief and represent them in applications for citizenship, permanent residence, visas for domestic violence or trafficking victims, and other immigration benefits, as well as in non-detained removal proceedings, order of supervision appointments, and post-order motions. The Youth and Communities team also serves the broader community through referrals from partner community- based organizations. The New York Immigrant Family Unity Project (NYIFUP) team has been serving as assigned counsel under the first-in-the-nation program providing legal representation for indigent New Yorkers in detained removal proceedings at the Varick Street Immigration Court and in New Jersey.

Brief Description of the Position

Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) seeks a full-time Immigration Practice Social Worker to join our Padilla and Youth & Communities teams. The Immigration Practice Social Worker will team up with the Padilla and Youth and Communities attorneys and paralegals to provide comprehensive legal representation and to determine case strategy. Additionally, the Immigration Practice Social Worker will draw on a broad range of theories, knowledge, research and skills to facilitate collaboration across health, welfare and other systems that impact clients’ well-being. 

Responsibilities

The Immigration Practice Social worker will team up with the Padilla and Youth and Communities attorneys and will conduct client assessments, provide crisis intervention and supportive counseling, support clients as they navigate intersecting systems, and connect clients with a wide variety of social services and benefits. In addition, the Immigration Practice Social Worker will prepare comprehensive psychosocial assessments for submission to Immigration Court and/or USCIS and testify in client’s removal proceedings in Immigration Court.  

Qualifications:

Applicants must have a Master’s Degree in Social Work with at least two years of professional social work experience. Applicants must be licensed or willing, and eligible, to become licensed within one year of hire date. Candidates must have a demonstrated commitment to immigrant rights, criminal justice, and social justice. Applicants must also be willing to work as part of a team in a very fast-paced environments and need to possess excellent writing, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills. Strong preference will be given to applicants who have experience working in immigration proceedings.
