OVERVIEW: Metropolitan Congregations United seeks a Lead Environmental Justice Organizer to manage two EJ staff; to conduct outreach, base building, training, education and leadership development for leaders; and lead an EJ campaign through the initiatives of an Interfaith EJ Task Force composed of a growing base of congregation-based teams. The position reports to the MCU Executive Director and is a collaborative effort between MCU, Sierra Club National, Roderick Burton of New Northside Missionary Baptist Church, and Community First Plus. Gamaliel National Training in relational organizing techniques with faith-based organizations will be provided.


BACKGROUND: Metropolitan Congregations United (MCU) is a grassroots organization composed of St. Louis area congregations of all faiths. We put faith into action by developing leaders who move their congregations, organizations, and communities to change public policy for the common good. Since our organization’s founding in 1991, MCU’s efforts have utilized relational organizing tools to build grassroots community power by developing strong relationships grounded in trust and leadership building to fight for collective social justice. A recent issue focus of MCU, the Environmental Justice campaign aims to support clergy leaders, community groups, and impacted residents to build the power necessary to fuel a local environmental justice movement and fight for policy change that addresses the disproportional impacts of environmental racism on low-income communities of color in St. Louis, Missouri. 


Primary responsibilities include:

  • Supervise EJ Team and lead development of EJ campaign
  • Work with key lead pastors and clergy groups in Jennings and the 27th Ward to build an EJ base that mobilizes congregations
  • Identify and develop new leaders of impacted residents – those who are typically underserved and underrepresented – to build teams that identify issue cuts and lead actions through one-on-ones, leadership trainings, membership meetings, and other forms of member engagement
  • Provide leadership development training in relational organizing tools
  • Build and sustain partner and coalition relationships with other EJ groups across issues
  • Coordinate with EJ campaign staff to facilitate monthly EJ Task Force meetings and issue working groups
  • Lead 2 pilot community participatory-research programs around energy benchmarking and air quality monitoring with partner organizers and participating congregations
  • Actively participate in organizational planning with MCU staff


The following experience and qualifications are required:

  • Strong understanding and passion for social justice and environmental justice issues; 
  • Fluency in racial equity issues, implicit bias, dialogues around race and public policy; 
  • Ability to work evenings and weekend events;
  • And has access to reliable transportation.

The following experience and qualifications are desired but not required:

  • Demonstrated success developing community relationships and building teams;
  • Ability to work with people of faith, recognizing that their faith will be a primary motivation for their involvement;
  • Experience connecting with Black communities and congregations is highly valued;
  • Proficiency in computer skills (Microsoft Office, Google Drive, video chat software)
  • Research skills and ability to analyze power dynamics, systems, and structures;
  • Special consideration will be given to candidates from the targeted communities.

 

Qualities of effective organizing leaders include but not limited to: excellent organizational skills with ability to manage diverse projects simultaneously; strong oral and communication skills critical for working with a variety of community leaders and personalities, open and willing to learn, intellectually and socially curious, flexible team player, and ambitious and self-motivated


LOCATION: Due to the pandemic, the role is expected to be mainly remote, with periodic socially distanced, masked, brief in-person activities. Local travel to community meetings will be required. Regular communications with your supervisor will occur by phone and video unless in-person is possible.


COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: Commensurate with experience. Full health benefits package provided.


HOURS: Full-time 40hrs/wk
