Clinical and Casework Responsibilities

·       Help prepare applications for cancellation of removal, asylum, adjustment of status, naturalization, among others.

·       Prepare files for initial consultations, including completed intake, initial client documents, and retainer.

·       Assist in conducting follow up work with immigration law cases, including preliminary drafts of immigration applications and filings/submissions to Immigration Court and S.F. Asylum office and USCIS, and correspondence to clients.

·       Write declarations in Spanish and English with clients.

·       Act as a liaison with social services/psychological evaluation/law enforcement/medical services /other external contacts to help clients with cases.

·       Coordinate evidence collection and translation

·       Meet regularly with removal defense attorneys to discuss case strategy.

·       Ensure that work is consistent with agency mission and with ethical guidelines as promulgated by the State Bar of California and other entities.

·       Assist at immigration law clinics with prospective clients and pro bono volunteers.

·       Assist in researching country conditions, researching the law, and maintain resource materials pertaining to asylum law and other related topics in immigration law.


Community Education and Outreach

·       Assist in providing appropriate referral lists to community during information sessions.

·       Assist in conducting immigration information sessions for immigrant community and media as well as assisting with outreach to community fairs.

·       Draft informational materials on asylum law and keep abreast of changes in immigration law.


Program Responsibilities

·       Participate in weekly case review and program meetings.

·       Assist in ensuring that active client case list is up-to-date weekly, including updating case list when cases are concluded.

·       Attend regular asylum law & immigration legal trainings.

·       Assist in ensuring that the funding requirements of the immigration law work are being met, including (i) inputting into database immigration intake information and (ii) assisting with reports for immigration law program.


Agency Wide Responsibilities:

·       Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings.

·       Attend agency-wide staff retreat.

·       Attend one board meeting.

·       Participate in committees as needed.

·       Represent the agency to the community at collaborative meetings, grantor meetings, community meetings, public events, and other forums.


Other Qualifications:

·       Fluent, bilingual and biliterate in English or Spanish.

·       Able to work well under pressure and meet important deadlines.

·       Strong writing skills; interested in learning legal research.

·       Team player, positive demeanor, self-starter, willing to learn new aspects of asylum and immigration law.

·       Dependable, reliable, solid work ethic.

·       Interest in immigration law and passionate about ensuring that poverty must not an impediment to justice.

·       Sensitive and capable of working with survivors of trauma and harm.

·       Strong interest in receiving training, mentorship, and to working in a collaborative setting, and to, over time, mentoring others including volunteers.


Compensation

·       Benefits: Salary FTE $44,500/year, plus benefits premiums (Union wage reopener currently pending; this salary will increase prior to 12/31/21).

La Raza Centro Legal, San Francisco is a non-profit community legal aid office that provides legal representation and counsel to low-income community members and immigrants in San Francisco, San Mateo County, and the Bay Area region. We assist those in need with free legal services in Immigration law, Elder and Disability law including general civil rights matters, and Workers’ Rights.

La Raza Centro Legal SF was founded in 1973, and since that time has partnered with the community so that justice may prevail.  Each year, La Raza Centro Legal SF serves over 4,000 individuals and is one of the leading civil rights legal aid organizations in the Bay Area. We pride ourselves on our collaborative, professional and inclusive culture. Compensation

This is a full-time, exempt position with benefits. This is NOT a remote position; we currently work in our San Francisco office one day per week. As the pandemic improves and pursuant to Department of Public Health guidelines, we will eventually, at a date to be determined, add additional in-person, in-office workdays. In addition, there are 15 paid holidays annually, a generous Simple IRA-retirement plan.
