Post-Release Program Coordinator Overview

El Refugio offers hospitality and visitation serving immigrants detained at Stewart Detention Center and their loved ones. We seek to hire a compassionate and dedicated Post-Release Program Coordinator to lead our new post-release support initiative.

The Post-Release Program Coordinator will be responsible for assisting individuals released from Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia as they make the transition from detention to joining their family or sponsor. Among other responsibilities, the Post-Release Program Coordinator will provide support making travel arrangements, facilitating communication with loved ones and support organizations, providing transportation if needed, offering short-term accommodations (1-2 nights), and providing clothing and toiletries. This person will create and execute a process that allows immigrants and asylum-seekers released from Stewart Detention Center the opportunity to reunite with their loved ones or sponsors as quickly as possible.

This is an opportunity for a process-oriented professional with a strong desire to accompany immigrants and asylum-seekers on their journeys while improving processes within our organization.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a point of contact and link between El Refugio, Stewart Detention Center personnel, families, sponsors, and attorneys whose clients are being released
  • Provide transportation from Stewart Detention Center to El Refugio following release
  • Provide hospitality for released persons and family members staying overnight (1-2 nights) following a release
  • Accommodate families who need to stay at the house on weekdays to attend court hearings or visit loved ones
  • Assist released persons or family members in making travel arrangements by bus, plane, or train
  • Assist with building and sustaining a volunteer network that includes partner organizations to better serve immigrants and asylum-seekers coming out of detention and their loved ones
  • Coordinate with volunteers to provide transportation when necessary to Columbus and Atlanta, including airport drop-off and navigation
  • Assist in the development of a referral system for those who need legal representation and ongoing social support
  • Ensure the availability of post-release resources such as phones, clothing, and toiletries at the house
  • Maintain records and documentation related to the post-release program
  • Develop and improve organizational processes and policies to ensure that our growing organization operates smoothly
  • Report any house maintenance issues to the Facilities Committee Chair

Required Qualifications

  • Deeply committed to immigrants’ rights and excited about building a new and innovative program
  • Ability to work independently, adapt to a flexible schedule, and manage multiple tasks or projects at the same time
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well with people, especially immigrants, asylum-seekers and family members who may be in crisis
  • Strong organizational skills, effective time management skills, and excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to work with a population that has experienced trauma
  • Ability to maintain personal and professional boundaries
  • Excellent computer and Internet research skills
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office and Google Office Suite products
  • Excellent writing and documentation skills
  • Fluent or highly proficient in spoken and written Spanish

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’ s degree in a relevant field
  • Prior experience working with immigrants or formerly incarcerated individuals
  • Prior experience working with a population that has experienced trauma or training in trauma-informed social supports
  • Experience with case management

Special requirements

This position requires a car and residence in the small town of Lumpkin, Georgia (population about 1,500). The Post-Release Program Coordinator will be expected to stay at El Refugio’s facility whenever those being released need to stay overnight. The Post-Release Program Coordinator is expected to be available Monday through Friday to perform the duties outlined above. A private room in El Refugio’s facility will be made available to the Post-Release Program Coordinator as a residence upon request. Work hours will be irregular and may include late nights and early mornings. The Post-Release Program Coordinator should expect to work 40 hours most weeks and to structure their days to include non-work time. Some weeks may require more than 40 hours.
