The Legacy Giving Associate works as an integral member of the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF)’s Philanthropy Team with a goal of building AWF’s pipeline of legacy donors. Reporting to the Legacy Giving Manger (Manager), this will be a full-time position based at AWF’s Washington, DC office.

The Associate will be primarily responsible for responding to new leads generated by marketing efforts, and following up with past inquiries by mail, phone, video chat, and email, gradually building up a portfolio of relationships to manage. There will be face-to-face visits (primarily locally) with donors when it is appropriate and safe to do so. The Associate will also assist the Manger with administrative tasks such as estate administration paperwork, data entry, and donor stewardship activities.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide requested gift and estate planning information to prospects by mail and email, follow up to ensure packets are received and answer questions.
  • Follow up with approximately 2,000 planned gift prospects (prior inquiries), and conduct a minimum of 10 substantive calls and/or visits per month with an ultimate goal of conversion to the Kilimanjaro Society.
  • Work with the Data Services team to upload marketing leads, surveys and other information gleaned from mailings to Raiser’s Edge and ensure coding is correct.
  • Assist Manager with estate administration, including completion of paperwork, filing, etc.
  • Attend local planned giving council meetings as appropriate.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • 1-2 years of development experience working directly with donors in a customer service capacity.
  • Comfort with making phone calls and having highly personal conversations with donors.
  • Knowledge of, or direct experience with gift planning a plus.
  • Self-Starter who can work independently, and collaborate with colleagues.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge or CRMs preferable.
  • Ability to commute to the Washington DC Office.
  • Strong time management and multi-tasking skills
  • Familiarity with conservation, especially in Africa, a distinct asset.
  • Ability to travel (approx. 10% of time with potential for increased travel)
