Position Summary

Jeff Skoll has worked on pandemics preparedness and response for over a decade, both through the Skoll Global Threats Fund and, currently, the Skoll Foundation. Jeff committed significant supplemental funding to the Foundation in 2020 for COVID-19 response and that work will continue over the next several years. The Foundation is focused on both bringing an end to the current COVID-19 outbreak and building the future global infrastructure to stop something like COVID-19 from happening again.

The Pandemics Sr. Fellow will provide public health knowledge and networks to help shape the Foundation’s pandemics strategy in 2021-2022. This is a 12-24 month, full-time position. The speed and breadth of the COVID-19 outbreak has led to significant demand for resources in a wide range of areas – from basic public health response capacity and core scientific research to effective public-private coordination and diagnostic/oxygen/vaccine development and more. As we move into the next phase of the pandemic, the Pandemics Fellow will play a key role in helping identify priorities, assess opportunities, and evaluate ongoing work. Reporting to the Foundation’s Senior Advisor, the Pandemics Fellow will work closely with the Foundation’s current cross-functional team that delivers on the pandemics strategy

Given the pervasive nature of COVID-19, which impacts all areas of the Foundation’s work and all segments of society, the Pandemics Fellow role will be highly collaborative, working internally across Foundation programs and externally with a wide spectrum of formal and informal relationships.  The Fellow will have experience translating public health information and data for non-specialists. This person will be empathic, intellectually curious, comfortable with autonomy, humble, and highly organized with top-notch communications and relationship-building skills. 

Responsibilities

• Serve as the Foundation’s inhouse domain expert on public health, including COVID-19 and related challenges
• Help shape the Foundation’s pandemics strategy and implementation, both with regard to COVID-19 and for longer-term pandemic preparedness and prevention
• Serve as a core member of the Foundation’s cross-functional pandemics team responsible for delivering resources to tackle COVID-19, including grantmaking, public communications, convenings, and other levers
• Work closely with Ending Pandemics, the entity incubated by Jeff Skoll, to ensure that short-term activities in response to COVID-19 help drive longer-term strengthening of global pandemic preparedness
• Follow key developments in global fora around both COVID-19 and broader pandemic preparedness, including the WHO, the CORDS Network, and other international efforts
• Serve as a resource for the broader Jeff Skoll Group, including Participant Media and Capricorn Investment Group, on pandemic-related questions/challenges
• Serve as an internal resource for organizational and staff questions around COVID, including safe work environments and organizational practices.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 5-7 years of relevant work experience and sectoral expertise
• Master’s degree in Public Health or a related discipline required
• Strong knowledge of public health, One Health concepts, and disease surveillance required
• Experience working in both the US and LMIC countries preferred
• Experience working with governments and/or multilateral agencies a plus
• Ability to multi-task, work with multi-stakeholders, maintain exceptional attention to detail, and proactively manage project timelines and deliverables
• Demonstrated experience working with and communicating science to non-technical audiences; excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills
• Consensus builder who is tactful in interactions with partners and grantees
• Systems thinker; experience working with interdisciplinary teams
• Excellent research and analytical skills; strong knowledge of quantitative methods, data analysis, and big data
• Independent and self-motivated, able to take initiative in an entrepreneurial environment within a small team
• Excellent interpersonal skills with positive attitude; desire and ability to work in a collaborative team environment
• Willingness to work with remote partners, with opportunities for travel
• Ability to handle highly confidential information with discretion
