EXP delivers our mission by bringing industry and educators together to deliver high quality career-focused programs to support 6,400 students at nine Southern California high schools, primarily located in the Los Angeles Harbor and South Bay regions. The organization is comprised of 20 full-time staff, supported by a network of over 400 volunteers. A 19-member Board of Directors, made up of representatives from industry and key stakeholder groups, provides governance and philanthropic leadership. Our annual operating budget for FY 2020 is $2.33 M. 

Position Description: Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Director of Advancement leads the department responsible for generation of all philanthropic revenue for the organization, which includes corporate sponsorships, grants, special events, and individual donors. This portfolio of diverse revenue streams represents is roughly 80% of the operating budget. The remaining 20% comes from fee-for-service contract revenue, which is generated through our Director of Programs and Strategic Partnerships, with assistance of Advancement and other departments.

The Director of Advancement leads a team that includes a Grants Manager, a Development Manager, and soon will share a Coordinator with the Marketing Department.  

The Director of Advancement is a member of the management team, which also includes Marketing, Operations, Programs & Strategic Partnerships, and the CEO. The organization seeks to create a shared leadership culture, and there is a high degree of collaboration and cooperation expected across and within departments.

Departmental Leadership Responsibilities: The ultimate goal of the Director of Advancement is to lead efforts in developing and sustaining a diverse revenue portfolio that will enable the organization to effectively deliver its mission and achieve long-term sustainability. Duties and responsibilities include:

·        Create, manage and execute fund development strategy; successfully solicit corporate and individual gifts, grants and event sponsorships; and assist with strategy development for contract proposals

·        Develop and refine messaging and materials for fundraising campaigns, grant proposals and reports, donor cultivation and stewardship projects, and collaborate with Marketing on donor-facing marketing activities including website, social media, email blasts, annual report and select program delivery materials

·        Identify, evaluate and grow relationships, cultivate and steward Board of Directors, donors, prospects, and volunteers, including prospect research and moves management strategy creation and oversight

·        Manage and assist CEO in major and principal gift solicitations

·        Increase infusion of fundraising best practices and a culture of philanthropy into organizational strategy, policies, procedures, and cross-department projects and events

·        Ensure accurate and timely records of donor and contribution information for internal and external reporting, stewardship, donor recognition, and financial reporting; spearhead inter-departmental collaboration toward CRM implementation

·        Work closely with CEO to develop strategy and materials for Board of Directors meetings and annual BOD retreat; provide support to CEO in Board recruitment, development, evaluation and training; and assist CEO with establishment of Board Fundraising Committee including management and motivation of committee members, once established

·        Collaborate with Program & Strategic Partnerships to engage board members, sponsors and donors in program activities as desired; collaborate to engage volunteers and other non-donor stakeholder groups in philanthropy.

 ·        Mentor, manage and maximize the productivity of the Grants Manager, Development Manager, and Development & Marketing Coordinator

·        Develop and monitor departmental budget; ensure effective and efficient use of organizational resources

Organizational Leadership Responsibilities: As a member of EXP’s management team, the Director of Advancement will  

·        Demonstrate a leadership and management style characterized by personal integrity, collaboration, creativity, and flexibility

·        Actively promote EXP and present a positive image of the organization, staff, and activities to external stakeholders and staff

·        Model and sustain positive EXP culture, communication, and cohesiveness

·        Collaborate with CEO and other department heads to support individual departmental goals and collective organizational success

·        Provide CEO with timely and accurate data and professional insight for effective decision-making

·        Contribute to organization-level strategy review, budget development, and evaluation of goals and impacts

·        Lead human resources functions in the recruitment, hiring, training, evaluation, and retention of respective department’s staff

·        Lead and develop the skill-set of the department both as a team and as individuals

·        Hold regular team meetings and one-on-one meetings with all direct reports to evaluate current work, improve communication and coordination, and set individual professional development plans

·        Implement standardized processes, procedures, and quality controls; review and approve accuracy of time staff allocations, mileage and other expenses for reimbursements

·        Ensure compliance with all policies, procedures, best practice standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Candidate Requirements

 ·        Six to eight years of progressive experience in building and maintaining productive relationships with major and principal gift level donors (individual, corporate, grant) and closing gifts in the 5- and 6-figure range

·        At least three years of supervisory experience and working as part of a management team

·        Proven success within a highly flexible, visible, and entrepreneurial culture; comfort working under tight timelines in fast-paced environments

·        Excellent interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence with donors and direct-reports, with an ability to develop and maintain long-term, productive relationships internally and externally

·        Equally comfortable interacting in corporate, educational and community environments

·        Understanding of philanthropic donor environment within the non-profit sector and in the Southern California region

·        Command of fundraising best practices and diverse solicitation strategies

 ·        CRM experience required, database design and implementation experience preferred; high proficiency in Microsoft Office

·        Experience overseeing budgets, with the capacity to allocate resources strategically and manage spending within budget

 ·        Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) required; or a minimum of 10 years of experience in fundraising roles

Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to work well under pressure and to work effectively in a team environment is required. Must possess strong initiative, discipline and have the ability to work with little supervision. Must have strong organizational skills with an ability to schedule, plan, prioritize and execute tasks in an efficient manner without sacrificing quality and accuracy; good attention to details, ability to work independently; strong interpersonal skills; and ability to interface effectively with co-workers, donors, vendors, program participants and the general public with a pleasant and professional demeanor.
