Lawyers for Civil Rights (LCR) works with communities of color and immigrants to fight discrimination and foster equity through creative and courageous legal advocacy, education, and economic empowerment. In partnership with law firms and community allies, we provide free, life-changing legal support to individuals, families, and small businesses.

Celebrating our 20th anniversary in 2021, BizGrow provides free legal assistance, business support, and technical assistance to minority, immigrant, and women business owners—ensuring they encounter fewer obstacles and more opportunities.  We work in close collaboration with pro bono attorneys from a wide-range of private law firms.

Growing wealth in historically disadvantaged communities is a critical civil rights issue. BizGrow has helped close the wealth gap by fueling equitable economic growth and increasing access to economic justice. Our programs include free legal representation, technical assistance, and workshops for small business owners on subjects such as entity formation, contracts, taxes, commercial leases, and intellectual property. The BizGrow Fellowship is open to recent law school graduates and attorneys completing temporary post-graduate employment such as a judicial clerkship or another fellowship. 

JOB DESCRIPTION 

The BizGrow Fellow will work under the supervision of the BizGrow Director and other senior leadership. The Fellow will have the opportunity to expand legal services for minority, immigrant, and women-owned small businesses.  Fellows should expect to gain substantial experience in economic justice, transactional work, and advocacy. This includes:

  • Working one-on-one with small business owners to advise on their legal needs;
  • Representing small business clients on common start-up needs such as entity formation, contract review, and drafting;
  • Working closely with pro bono partners to assist small businesses on larger scale projects such as our work to assist small businesses affected by the Lawrence gas explosions; 
  • Advocating on behalf of Massachusetts-based entrepreneurs through legal matters such as our recent Title VI Complaint concerning minority contracting opportunities in Boston;
  • Writing reports and toolkits to assist our entrepreneurs and pro bono partners easily access and deliver quality legal services; 
  • Organizing and leading workshops on legal issues pertinent to entrepreneurs in partnership with small business community partners; and
  • Coordinating legal clinics in conjunction with pro bono attorneys to keep entrepreneurs up-to-date on their legal needs. 

The Fellowship is for a one-year period, with the possibility of an extension for a second year. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must possess a J.D. degree and 1-3 years of post-law school legal experience. Preference will be given to candidates with corporate or transactional experience. Applicants must be extremely hard-working, highly self-motivated, and passionate about civil rights, racial justice and economic justice, including entrepreneurship. 

The ideal candidate will also have: 

  • Excellent writing, editing, public speaking, and analytical skills; 
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills; 
  • Experience working with low-income communities, communities of color and/or immigrant communities; 
  • Knowledge and experience with civil rights and/or public interest legal issues; 
  • The ability to work productively and efficiently with minimal supervision; and
  • The ability to work collegially with a wide-range of groups and individuals.
