Organization Profile:

BUILD was founded in 1999 in Silicon Valley with a big idea that entrepreneurship presents a powerful opportunity to ignite the potential of disengaged high school students and equip them with the tools necessary to achieve in school and life.  BUILD has since expanded nationally into a four-year college and job readiness program with almost 2,000 students enrolled in the San Francisco Bay area, Washington D.C., Boston and New York City.  We launched our program in New York in 2016 and are currently serving over 400+ students in several partner schools across the city.

Our program begins in ninth grade as a daily, elective course taught by teachers who receive training and ongoing support from BUILD.  During years one and two of the program, students work with teachers, volunteer mentors and BUILD staff to start and manage small businesses.  In the final two years, students apply the entrepreneurial mindset they have acquired to launch their future college and career pathways. BUILD staff and mentors guide students through a process that includes self-exploration; college and job research; developing a personal brand and a resume; job internships; college visits, financial literacy instruction; and assistance with college applications and financial aid.

BUILD graduates transition to college or other post-secondary options with the skills and confidence needed to persist in higher-education and to be successful in achieving their long-term career goals. For more information, please visit www.build.org.
