BACKGROUND: Now in its 16th season, Epic Theatre Ensemble is a $1MM non-profit that builds thoughtful citizenship by producing socially-minded plays and connecting them to our partner schools through rigorous in-school and after-school residencies. Off-Broadway, we’ve commissioned and developed 33 new award-winning plays. Over 130,000 audience members have seen an Epic production across (including national and international tours of Nilaja Sun’s No Child… and Pike St.), including over 22,000 students and 10,000 adult first-time theatergoers. Educationally, Epic has reached over 30,000 students with our in-depth arts residencies with some of the most disenfranchised youth communities in New York City (including three full-school partnerships), our after-school Shakespeare Remix program (winner of the 2009 Coming Up Taller Award from the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities) and our ground-breaking arts leadership program, Epic NEXT. 


 Epic Theatre Ensemble is governed by a 12-member Board of Directors and an Executive Committee comprising the officers. The full Board meets 4 times annually in addition to one board retreat. 

 Epic Theatre Ensemble has a full-time staff of 7 and is managed by an executive staff of 3. 

 Operating expenses for FY 2017 totaled $945,000. 


Over the last 8 years, Epic has worked successfully to diversify its revenue sources from the private sector, and instituted a multi-faceted fund development effort. This program now includes a broad range of individual, special event, foundation, and corporate support. In FY 2017, Epic received $639,000 in contributions through fundraising efforts. Of the total raised, approximately $111,500 was from individuals, $329,500 from foundations and corporations, and $79,000 was generated through special events. 

BASIC FUNCTION: The Development Manager is accountable for the strategic direction and implementation of a comprehensive resource development program to support Epic’s objectives. There is consensus among staff and board that there is significant untapped potential to expand the development program for Epic. The annual operating fundraising goal is approximately $650,000 at present. 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: The Development Manager reports to the Co-Founder/Executive Director. He/she also works closely with Management Team consisting of two Co-Founders/Co-Artistic Directors. The Communications and Development Associate reports to the Development Manager. 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: The Development Manager will be expected to: 

 Develop and expand significantly a comprehensive, goal-based, long-and short-term fund development plan. 

 Work with the Executive Director and Board to identify institutional needs. 

 Create, implement and evaluate fund development programs based on Epic’s goals. 

 Establish fundraising forecasts and develop calendars and action plans. 

 Work with the Executive Director and Board to identify and attract additional board members. 

 Lead the effort to tap the full potential of Epic’s donor prospect pool. 

 Work closely with the Executive Director to strategize approaches to major and principal gift prospects and donors. Accompany the Executive Director and/or Board members on cultivation and solicitation visits. 

 Maintain collaborative working relationships with other members of the management team to ensure maximum support for fund development throughout the organization. 

 Identify, cultivate and solicit major donor prospects. 

 Write grant proposals and reports, working closely with staff and others; many annual renewals are and will continue to be written by Epic’s Executive Director. 

 Develop, coordinate and direct Board and other volunteer support of development, including staffing the Board Development Committee. 

 Supervise all external communications and marketing activities to ensure appropriate position of Epic, including media relations, promotional materials and marketing. 

 Assess the current department’s strengths and weaknesses; make recommendations for enhancement of current structure/team. 

 Create and foster a development culture that is consistent with Epic’s overall culture and constituents. 

 Prepare and administer departmental plan and budget; prepare annual income/expense projections. 

 Oversee fundraising operational systems including gift processing, tracking, and 

Acknowledgement via PatronManager. 

 Oversee and implement a slate annual fundraising gala with the assistance of outside consultants. 

 Prepare and present reports on a regular basis to the Executive Director and Board. 

 Recruit, build, manage, motivate, train and mentor a team of professional and support staff that has as their common priority increasing philanthropic support for the institution. 

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate should have/be

 Demonstrated track record of success soliciting major gifts. 

 Experience growing and building a development program. 

 Knowledge of “best practices” in development. 

 Ability to relate well to a wide variety of constituencies. 

 A self-starter who is willing to devote extra effort to get the job done. 

 Excellent verbal and written skills as well as the capacity to inspire confidence and trust. 

 Entrepreneurial spirit, innovation and the willingness to be a creative risk-taker.
