Position Summary

The Movement Capacity Building Manager is part of the Movement Capacity Building (MCB) department at Race Forward.

The Movement Capacity Building team envisions racial justice movements led by Black, indigenous, and other people of color (BIPOC) communities with the self-determination, power, and resources to transform our material conditions. We honor local organizing, histories, culture and context in place. We embody multi-racial, cross-movement solidarity by:

  • Developing tangible organizing and policy tools
  • Working with community leaders and organizations to amplify strategies
  • Building networks and connections for shared learning and alignment.

Reporting to the Vice President of Movement Capacity Building, the MCB Manager is responsible for developing and leading a membership network of individuals and organizations committed to racial justice learning, organizing, and movement building. The MCB Manager also leads the RaceAnd webinar series that engages community members in racial justice learning and analysis, as well as supports other efforts to engage a broader community with racial justice movement building, such as Facing Race, Race Forward's national conference. In addition, the MCB Manager is a skilled facilitator and trainer who can lead Race Forward trainings as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

Membership Network (65%)

  • Develop a new racial justice membership network that builds upon Race Forward's engagement with individuals and organizations through our BRE/ORE trainings, client trainings, the Facing Race conference, and Colorlines. Development includes determining the structure of the network, learning from other experiences within the organization, assessing technological needs in consultation with staff and consultants, and other design elements.
  • Maintain the network through online engagement and learning opportunities, connection to local racial justice organizing efforts, elevation of policy solutions and organizing campaigns, and opportunities for members to connect with each other.
  • Lead occasional convenings (both virtual and in-person, once that is an option) of the membership network.

#RaceAnd Webinar Series (20%)

  • Manage the #RaceAnd webinar series, producing content to engage audiences and increase understanding of structural racism as it intersects with other issue areas and systems of oppression.

Facilitation and Training (10%)

  • Support the Building Racial Equity/Organizing Racial Equity (BRE/ORE) trainings, working with the Training and Content Manager.
  • Serve as trainer for BRE/ORE and client-based trainings as needed.
  • Collaborate with the MCB team in our engagement with movement building groups seeking organizational development support.

Movement Capacity Building Department (5%)

  • Support MCB's content management for Facing Race and other public convenings.
  • Work with other departments, including communications and finance, to ensure success of trainings, webinars, convenings, and other programs.
  • Support in advancing Race Forward's energy democracy, Mass Freedom, food justice, environmental justice work, and other emerging bodies of work as necessary, and including through development of webinars, workshops, and other events that promote learning and alignment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

To perform successfully in this role, incumbent should possess skills identified below:

  • Experience with community organizing, including digital organizing.
  • Experience and skills navigating and managing digital platforms.
  • Strong sense of design and accessibility in implementing digital platforms and systems.
  • Ability and confidence with public speaking, training, and facilitation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to juggle multiple tasks, work with partners, and make adjustments as needed.
  • Experience developing content to engage people with a racial justice analysis.
  • Ability to work independently and with strong initiative and creativity.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team on large, complex projects.
  • Experience working remotely, ability to manage travel logistics and scheduling details.
  • Proficiency in Mac interfaces, Microsoft Office applications (i.e. PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Keynote, etc.) Google Suite, SalesForce, and project management tools such as Asana and confidence with technological platforms and innovations.
  • Availability to travel (once travel is an option again).
  • Strong work ethic and equally strong sense of humor and patience.
  • Deep, long-standing commitment to racial justice and understanding of Race Forward's mission and programs.

Qualifications and Experience

  • 5 to 7 years of experience as an organizer, facilitator, and trainer.
  • Digital organizing experience.
  • Project management experience.
  • Lived experience working in racially diverse environments and facilitating multi-racial groups.
  • Knowledge and analysis of racial justice with an intersectional framework, including gender justice, disability justice, etc.

Additional Information

This position requires long periods of time at a desk on a computer, including video conferencing and may require time outside of normal business hours. Occasional plane travel when it is safe to do so.
