Capitol Hill Housing, a 40+ year old affordable housing and community development agency, seeks an organized, experienced Grants Manager to support our vision for a Seattle where everyone—from teachers and artists to seniors on fixed incomes to young families – can set down roots and thrive. The Capitol Hill Housing Foundation (CHHF) is a 501(c)(3) public charity mobilizing funds for, and co-located with, Capitol Hill Housing (CHH).

 

Position Summary:

The Grants Manager will manage and execute a grant strategy supporting a strategic approach to institutional giving for the Capitol Hill Housing Foundation (CHHF). CHHF has a strong track record of raising grant revenue over its 10-year history. During that time, the Foundation has grown to a modest staff of 6 with 1.5 FTE dedicated to grant support (1.0 FTE of which is the Grants Manager position). 2019 CHHF annual grant revenue was approximately $515,000; building on this record of success, we are looking to expand grant revenue in 2020.


In addition, CHHF is the backbone organization for a collaborative $25 million capital campaign with 5 other nonprofit partner organizations, which will help build over 400 new affordable homes alongside space for community programs, health and human services, and local minority-owned businesses.


The Grants Manager position will be responsible for grant acquisition and stewardship for the annual fund and the capital campaign, including research and prospecting, annual strategic grant planning, grant writing, funder communications, grant tracking in Salesforce (CRM), grant reporting, and funder acknowledgement. This position works directly with CHH program staff to develop strategies for funding programs and related projects. In addition, they work closely with the Foundation & Capital Campaign Manager, VP of Advancement & External Affairs, and partner organization staff on capital grant proposals as assigned.


  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Lead the development of the annual grants strategy and calendar with support from the Foundation & Capital Campaign Manager.
  • Working with the appropriate staff, including program staff and capital campaign partners, prepare and submit grant applications for restricted and unrestricted funding sources.
  • Perform prospect research on foundations, corporations and government sources through the Foundation Directory Online database and other resources to identify new grant opportunities throughout the year, including capital grant opportunities.
  • Meticulously record and track grant opportunities in Salesforce (CRM) through all stages, with detailed deliverables for each opportunity including LOI, proposal and reporting deadlines.
  • Coordinate clear internal communication around grant opportunities, reporting and deadlines.
  • Manage timely grant submission, funder acknowledgment and reporting processes.
  • In collaboration with the VP of Advancement & External Affairs and Foundation & Capital Campaign Manager, build relationships with, communicate with, and manage stewardship of Foundation and Corporate donors.
  • Manage timely awards tracking, submission and acknowledgement.
  • Prepare regular internal reports on grant activity for review by staff and board leadership.
  • Attend and prepare for quarterly CHH Foundation Board Meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

  • Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills:Demonstrated commitment to racial and economic justice, as well as awareness of the impacts of institutional racism on housing and economic opportunity.
  • Minimum three years of grant writing experience.
  • Excellence in writing and compelling storytelling; gift for translating program facts and data into a cohesive narrative with a heartbeat.
  • Demonstrated track record of crafting winning public and private funding proposals for nonprofits.
  • Experience framing structure, tone and content of grant proposals in response to differing institutional conventions and priorities.
  • Experience developing grant proposal budgets in collaboration with program staff.
  • The ability to operate efficiently and gracefully under pressure of deadlines.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with prospect research techniques and resources.
  • Project management skills; highly organized.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  • Proficiency in general office software, such as MS Office Suite.

 

  • Desired Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills:Experience working in and with communities of color, which are disproportionately represented among our low-income housing residents.
  • 1+ year grants management experience (full spectrum of prospect research, grant tracking, reporting, funder acknowledgment and stewardship).
  • Experience in the affordable housing industry.
  • Experience writing complex government grants.
  • Knowledge of local, state and national funding sources.
  • Proficiency in Salesforce.
