YouthCare, GED Tutor - YouthBuild

YouthCare's YouthBuild is a pre-apprenticeship construction training program that seeks to empower youth and young adults ages 18-24 with the skills, education, professionalism and self-confidence necessary for successful entry into the construction trades. A vital component of the YouthBuild program is its education programming. Young people have the opportunity to work toward their education goals; including completing their GED and transitioning to post-secondary options. In this AmeriCorps project, the AmeriCorps member will serve students in the GED classroom as well as those students who have recently graduated from the program and are transitioning into another educational and/or career opportunity. The AmeriCorps member will build positive relationships with students as a critical foundation for the effective assistance of students in achieving their educational goals. The AmeriCorps member will receive training on the structure and content of the GED test and will assist homeless youth in gearing up to meet the stringent testing requirements. The AmeriCorps member will serve by providing individualized, one-on-one tutoring to homeless youth and young adults in the GED classroom. In doing so, they will acquire skills and become proficient in the use of the various curricula materials and technological resources used for teaching. In addition to serving as tutors for the program, the AmeriCorps member will be responsible for organizing and managing a group of volunteer tutors to work with students. The AmeriCorps member also will learn and assist homeless youth in successfully learning how to navigate the GED computer-based testing system. Members also will teach other volunteers how to assist students with navigating the GED testing system. From time to time, the AmeriCorps member will be encouraged to prepare and teach small group learning lessons and/or lead small group academic enrichment activities. This position is contingent on funding and is scheduled to be in-place from 09/01/2018 through 07/15/2019.
