The Accountant performs a variety of accounting duties, with a focus on Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund full cycle accounting, state solicitation registrations, field office accounting and fixed asset accounting.


Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund – Full Cycle Accounting

  • Recording checks received
  • Processing vendor and intercompany invoices received
  • Maintain intercompany account due to Defenders of Wildlife:
  • Record monthly allocation of salary /fringe/overhead from Defenders of Wildlife to Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund
  • Prepare monthly intercompany invoice from Defenders of Wildlife to Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund
  • Process intercompany invoice
  • Reconcile intercompany due-to and due-from accounts on a monthly basis
  • Reconcile all Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund balance sheet accounts (prepaid expenses /  accrued expenses/ etc.) on a monthly basis; record journal entries as necessary
  • Assist in preparation for Annual Financial Statement Audit
  • Assist in preparation of Annual Form 990


Defenders of Wildlife - State Solicitation Registrations

  • Overall responsibility to ensure all state solicitations for Defenders of Wildlife are processed timely and accurately
  • Annually, populate database with data for state solicitation registrations based upon completed Form 990’s
  • Complete preliminary state solicitation registrations as they come due
  • Upon completion of registrations, present to Controller and VP of Finance for final approval
  • Coordinate obtaining signatures and notaries as required
  • File finalize (signed and notarized) state solicitation registrations to the state with appropriate payments as necessary
  • Maintain file of all completed state solicitation registrations


Defenders of Wildlife - Field Office Related Accounting

  • Process monthly lease payments for field office locations according to executed leases/invoices received
  • Record journal entries to achieve straight line lease expense as necessary
  • Manage/reconcile field office security deposits
  • Manage sub-lease income
  • Prepare annual personal property tax returns for field office states, working with IT and facilities department to gather necessary information
  • Assist in preparation of centralized field office budgets (to include rent/postage/ telephone/property tax)


Defenders of Wildlife - Fixed Asset Accounting

  • Maintain fixed asset schedule; add capital asset purchases to schedule using unique identifier provided by IT department
  • Calculate and record depreciation expense in General Ledger on a monthly basis
  • Prepare monthly report for IT department comparing capital asset purchases to capital budget
  • Work with IT department at fiscal year end to record fixed asset disposals; remove disposals from fixed asset schedule 


  • Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Accounting or related discipline. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a substitute
  • Experience: 1+ years of accounting experience
  • Other:
  • Well-organized with the ability to work independently
  • Strong ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills
  • Microsoft Dynamics SL/GP experience a plus
