Rosie's Place, a sanctuary for poor and homeless women, offers emergency and long-term assistance to women who have nowhere else to turn. Rosie’s Place accepts no government funds, and relies instead on committed volunteers and private supporters to accomplish its effective and innovative work.

 

OPPORTUNITY:

Advocates provide key assistance to Rosie’s Place guests while supporting and validating their sense of self-worth and responsibility. Advocates provides one-to-one assistance, information, and referrals to appropriate resources, consistent with Rosie’s Place mission, philosophy, and policies. In this role, the Advocate spends part of their time doing inventory management of essential needs for guests, such as clothing and toiletries. This critical role supports our goal of ensuring that guests are treated with dignity and respect by having access to essential items. Under the supervision of the Advocacy Management Team, Advocates provide services that are in line with the core values and mission of Rosie’s Place.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS:  

ADVOCACY

  • Support guests by helping meet their needs as individually identified by them. encourage self-sufficiency, responsibility, and independence.
  • Meet with Rosie’s Place guests and provide assistance with accessing services, resources and referrals for needs such as: transportation assistance, emergency clothes, food pantries, Department of Transitional Assistance, and other governmental offices, emergency shelter, housing and other community resources. 
  • Provide information and referrals to services offered on-site, by both Rosie’s Place programs and other allied partners, including referrals to outside agencies and government programs.
  • Provide Advocacy services remotely via our call center, and in-person at our drop-in center.
  • Maintain an up-to-date understanding of community resources as well as current regulations and requirements for obtaining public benefits, housing and other services.
  • Assess and assist guests in prioritizing their needs and forming realistic action plans.
  • Maintain accurate guest records in Salesforce, our guest database. Ensure confidentiality when handling all aspects of guests’ information.
  • Maintain high level of knowledge about current guests.
  • Participate in weekly supervision, program meetings, and monthly staff meetings.
  • Intervene in guest’s crises and emergencies in a dignified and respectful manner as needed.
  • Perform any additional duties as assigned by the Director of Advocacy Services and the Advocacy Management team.
  • Report directly to the Director of Advocacy Services and the Advocacy Management team.

INVENTORY

  • Open and sort donations of clothing and miscellaneous items; assess items according to need and condition.
  • Prepare excess clothing for removal by the Garment District or other vendor.
  • Check and maintain inventory of clothing room, order and purchase items if needed.
  • Keep clothing room neat, organized, and well-stocked.
  • Assist with toiletries and other donations that come in particularly during busy times, such as the holiday season.
  • Under the supervision of the Director of Advocacy, spend within the allocated clothing budget.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong commitment to social justice and the mission of Rosie’s Place.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to exercise sound judgement and think quickly on your feet.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work well and effectively communicate with other department employees.
  • Strong customer service mindset with effective and diplomatic, yet supportive communication style.
  • Dependable, flexible and able to work effectively in a collaborative and busy department.
  • 2 years of experience in counseling, case management, or advocacy.
  • Experience with crisis intervention with folks who have experienced trauma, homelessness, mental health challenges, and/or substance use disorders.
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Services or related field.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Bilingual in Spanish, Haitian/Creole, Mandarin, Cantonese, Portuguese, or Cape Verde Creole preferred.

 

WORK EXPECTATIONS:

We are a hands-on team and seek employees who are passionate about our work and service to our community. The Advocate is an exempt position and is expected to work onsite at Rosie’s Place during their work week and engage regularly with staff, guests and volunteers.

 

We continue to adapt to safety protocols related to COVID-19 as we understand them and all employees must follow our safety protocols. It is required that all Rosie’s Place staff members are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Monday-Friday, 9am—5pm
