Full and Part-Time (Temporary) Visitor Gallery Assistant

Visitor and Gallery Assistants (VGAs) are the lobby and in-gallery customer-service representatives of the Visitor and Member Experience team. VGAs engage with visitors on their journey throughout the Museum at entry, admissions, and in the exhibition galleries. They promote the Whitney’s broad program, and ensure that visitors understand and abide by the Museum’s visitor policies in a warm, welcoming, and professional manner. They are tasked with creating a warm, engaging environment that supports audience development and audience experience with the objective of helping the department grow revenue opportunities and reach revenue goals.

Since the Whitney’s reopening last summer, Visitor and Gallery Assistants have played an integral role in keeping our Museum community safe by ensuring visitors understand new policies like one-way systems, social distancing guidelines and face-covering requirements. We’re eager to continue welcoming visitors safely back to the Whitney and want you to play a part!

Post-Covid operations are uncertain. Employment will be temporary for a period of up to 6 months and then further reviewed. 

Your Safety

At the Whitney, the safety and security of our staff and visitors is our top priority. Our operational plans are in line with CDC and state guidance on reducing transmission of Covid-19, and are reviewed on an on-going basis with an outside medical expert. Public-facing staff are issued PPE daily. 

General Responsibilities

-       Maintain a friendly and professional manner with Museum’s visitors and staff

-       Provide excellent customer service to members, prospects, and general visitors by adhering to the guidelines provided in the Visitor Experience Principles

-       Act as an Ambassador for the Museum. Promote offerings like the Shop, membership program, and the overall exhibition program.

-       Maintain the health and safety of the entire Museum community by ensuring visitors understand and abide by social distancing guidelines, face-covering requirements, and one-way systems

-       Provide support during after–hours events and programs

Supporting Daily Operations

-        Process all transactions to the Museum for admissions, Museum sponsored programs and membership

-        Observe all cash management policies and procedures

-        Utilize accesso–Siriusware (Point-of-Sales ticketing system), Slack (internal communication platform), and Zendesk (cloud-based customer support software)

-        Confirm visitors have the appropriate PPE prior to entering the building

-        Entry validation (scanning)

-        Line management (indoor and outdoor)

-        Staff coat check as a part of daily operations and events (as needed)

-        Provide information to visitors

-        Restock brochures (as needed)

In the Galleries

-        Welcome visitors and staff warmly with a smile

-        Initiate conversations with visitors, anticipate visitor needs, and respond to visitor questions

-        Maintain the integrity of the Whitney’s galleries by ensuring that visitors understand appropriate onsite conduct and the Museum’s visitor policies. Deliver that message in a way that ensures visitors feel welcome

-        Keep an open line of communication with colleagues in Security, Facilities, Engineers, AV and Retail

-        Uphold high standards of customer service and professionalism at all times. Go the extra mile to ensure visitors have an exemplary onsite experience

-        Other duties as required


-       A minimum of 1-2 years of customer service experience in a public facing environment

-       Friendly, outgoing, and professional attitude

-       Genuine Interest in public facing customer service interactions

-       Excellent communication and empathetic listening skills

-       Ability to develop customer relations

-       Works well under pressure in fast-paced environment

-       Must be able to work weekend, holidays, early and evening hours 

-       Ability to stand for long periods of time

-       Previous POS and cash handling experience preferred

-       Working knowledge of a Microsoft Office Suite or comparable software

-       Interest in arts and culture a plus

-       Bi-lingual a plus
