Stipend for a 12-hour on-call shift. Stipend per forensic examination

The On-call Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner responds to calls from local hospitals participating in our SAFE Program and provides post-acute sexual assault forensic/medical assessment to adults and adolescents (age 12 and older) in a trauma-informed manner. They also work collaboratively with Rape Crisis Counselors and Advocates, who are in the Emergency Department responding to a call, to ensure trauma-informed supportive counseling for victims/survivors and follow up from the Center. Must be a licensed health care practitioner, as defined by the New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH): Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Physician’s Assistant, Physician.

This is an on-call position. The SAFE is an Independent Contractor with Center for Safety & Change, and is not eligible for health and other employee benefits. Shifts are 12 hours in length, from 7am-7pm and/or 7pm-7am.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Signing up for shifts on a monthly basis based on your availability and submitting a timesheet and a case timesheet at the close of each month 

Collecting evidence and performing an objective, client-centered DOH-compliant forensic examination once the patient has given written consent

Testifying in court if subpoenaed to do so

Reviewing medical options for HIV prophylaxis, anti-biotics, and emergency contraception

Taking a non-judgmental and trauma-informed approach while working with victims/survivors and providing them the range of options, without bias

Working collaboratively with the Director of Special Victims Services and the Senior Coordinator of SAFE Program to ensure appropriate documentation, as well as evidence collection and storage 

Working cooperatively and respectfully with Rape Crisis Counselors, Special Victims Advocates, and Emergency Department personnel while responding to a call

Completing case review with the Senior Coordinator of SAFE Program, either in person or by phone, within 48 hours of the case’s completion

Adhering to policies related to Center for Safety & Change’s mission, vision, and values 

Position Requirements:

  • Must be a licensed health care practitioner as defined by the NYS DOH: Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Physician’s Assistant, Physician.
  • Must have completed a forty (40) hour training program compliant with NYS DOH-approved SAFE Certification.
  • Must have completed clinical preceptorship with the Center’s Senior Coordinator of SAFE Program, or with a preapproved designee, and have met the standards of Key Competencies of Sexual Assault Forensic Examiners: Certification Form resulting in application to NYS DOH for NYSAFE certification.
  • Must obtain and maintain a professional liability insurance policy that will cover SAFE activities (at the rate of $1,000,000 each claim/$3,000,000 aggregate).
  • Must be able to respond to calls at participating hospitals within 60 minutes of receiving notification.
  • Must provide personal health information to Senior Coordinator of SAFE Program, as required by the hospitals (including annual physical examination and documentation of the following: Hepatitis B and Flu vaccinations, and tuberculosis screening).
