This is a Full-Time exempt position that reports directly to Zoe Alexandra, the co-editor of Peoples Dispatch. The emphasis of this position is reporting on social justice movements in North America and political developments, but will also involve a significant amount of desk work. Basic knowledge of SEO and copy editing is required.

Responsibilities. Include but are not limited to the following (with the flexibility to implement other projects of value and interest):

  • Closely following progressive and left movements and organizations in the North America region and writing articles on key updates or struggles they are involved in.
  • Following geopolitical developments, especially with regard to the role of the US globally, and filing timely reports.
  • Contacting sources from movements, governments, institutions, universities etc. for pieces.
  • Copy editing and fact checking articles and uploading them to the website.
  • Copy editing and fact checking video scripts.
  • Supporting the implementation of distribution mechanisms.

Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years of experience in a newsroom copy editing and/or writing.
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or record of professional development in writing and editing.
  • Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)

Preferred Skills:

  • Excellent research skills
  • A high degree of flexibility and ability to problem solve
  • Fluency in other languages besides English (Spanish and/or Portuguese preferred)
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent copywriting and copy-editing skills
  • Masterful organizational, time management skills and multitasking abilities
  • Energetic, organized, a team player; a “roll up your sleeves and do what’s needed” kind of person
  • Flexible – able to adjust to changing priorities
  • Excellent follow-through and attention to detail
  • Solid deliberation skills and political tact/flexibility
