Emerge New York seeks an Executive Director


Emerge New York, the Empire State’s premier political leadership training organization for Democratic women, is searching for an Executive Director to join our team. Founded in 2017, our mission is to recruit, train and inspire a diverse group of Democratic women to pursue public office at all levels of government through our statewide candidate campaign training program.


Emerge NY is an affiliate of Emerge America, which has trained more than 4,000 women since 2002, with some 500 alums currently serving in elected office. Emerge America has more than 700 women on the ballot in 2018 nationwide.

Principal Responsibilities

The Executive Director will have internal and external leadership responsibilities to accelerate the growth and impact of Emerge NY across the state. As a young, highly dynamic organization, Emerge NY is looking for an Executive Director with the experience and know-how to lead in this start-up environment, where a pioneering attitude is coupled with deep organizational skill. The Executive Director is responsible for strategic direction, fundraising – both through his or her own resources and working with members and allies – financial and administrative management, programs, communications, and partnerships. Working closely with Emerge America and the Emerge NY Board of Directors, he or she will launch the state’s training programs.


Specific Duties:

Fundraising

-​In collaboration with ENY’s fundraising and executive committees, develops a strategic annual fundraising plan.

-Responsible for revenue generation, both through his or her network and coordination of the Board’s and others’ outreach.

-Leads the effort to build a robust contribution pipeline, including organizing strategic fundraising events, expanding donors, and maintaining timely recordkeeping.

-Meets fundraising goals as set forth by board. The Executive Director will spend up to 50% of their time fundraising.


Program

-Manages program member outreach, recruitment and selection process with the Board.

-Identifies, secures and supports Emerge curriculum trainers.

-Organizes and oversees Emerge community-building and training sessions, including scheduling speakers, building curriculum and providing logistical support.


Overall Leadership of Emerge NY

-Leads the organization in the development, implementation and accomplishment of a mission- and metrics-driven annual work plan as developed with Emerge America and the Emerge NY Board of Directors.

-Responsible for enhancing and creating, where needed, an internal infrastructure for the organization. Emerge NY embraces a transparent system of distributed leadership, overseen by the Executive Director and the Board.

-Assists the Board in setting goals and helps conduct strategic planning.

-With the Board, responsible for the financial management of the organization, including the development and implementation of the annual budget. The Executive Director is responsible for financial soundness, transparency and high ethical standards in the financial and administrative activities of Emerge NY.

-Responsible for administration of the general operation of Emerge NY, including: leading, reviewing, and evaluating the results of program activities; allocating resources for program effectiveness and efficiency, and developing organizational and administrative program objectives.

-Assures the organization and its mission, programs and people are consistently presented in a strong, positive, and inclusive image.

-Provides thought leadership and support of Emerge NY’s diversity and inclusion mission.


Partnerships and Relationships

-Builds strategically-driven institutional relationships and contributions by representing Emerge NY in meetings, speaking opportunities and targeted coalitions.

-Develops and maintains meaningful relationships with elected and appointed public officials, activists, and relevant non-profit organizations within the statewide Democratic political community.

-Acts as the primary spokesperson for Emerge NY. Oversees execution of the communications strategy developed with the communications committee.

-Coordinates with Emerge America and other Emerge affiliates, including program members, alumnae and advisors.


Other

-The position will require periodic travel across the state, including on weekends. The Executive Director will benefit from executive training conducted by Emerge America that may occur across the U.S.

-Occasional travel outside of New York will also occur.


Qualifications

Following are the duties that the Emerge New York Board believes are essential to successful job performance. The Board recognizes that a leader’s depth of experience in these areas may vary and it will review applicants with this individuality in mind. The Executive Director will participate in onboarding and ongoing training from Emerge America to ensure success.


Minimum Requirements

-Minimum of 2+ years’ experience leading an organization with measurable success.

-Minimum of 2+ years’ experience in political organization and mobilization at any level of issue or government/candidate advancement.

-Experience in New York politics and/or a basic understanding of the state political system.

-Record of effective participation in, systemization and management of organizational fundraising, based on goals and metrics.

-Experience in media relations and being the public face of an organization.

-Demonstrated commitment to Democratic political organizing.

-Knowledge of women’s political leadership issues and politics.

-Resident of New York with a driver’s license. (Car not required.)


Other Desired Experience and Capabilities

-Reasoning ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; exhibit independent judgment in the development, implementation and evaluation of plans, procedures and policies.

-Start-up experience and attitude: Record of building a new/young organizations and working in a start-up environment.

-Other knowledge: Knowledge of the techniques of political campaigns, budgeting, staff administration, community organization, best practices of organizational governance, marketing and public relations.

-Other skills: Ability to plan, direct and coordinate multiple activities in a high-energy environment; work effectively with vendors and contractors as necessary; be a strong and persuasive communicator in both oral and written forms.

-Locus of control: Tendency to take responsibility and ownership of outcomes.

-Thought leadership: Ability to provide institutional thought leadership that can accrue to recognition of Emerge NY as a force of insight and progress in the state.
