Community Health Councils (CHC) is a non-profit, community-based health education, advocacy and policy organization established in 1992 in response to the growing health and healthcare crisis. CHC’s mission is to collectively build equitable systems. CHC has been at the forefront of systems change work to eliminate disparities in health and well-being. Our policy areas include Health Systems, Food Justice and Community and Economic Resiliency. Each area represents a unique opportunity to engage members of impacted communities in program and policy development through a wide variety of community interventions and strategies as well as representation and leadership through the coalitions and collaborations convened. With a primary focus on South Los Angeles, CHC works at the local, state, and national level to improve the health of under-served and marginalized communities.

Position Summary

CHC’s policy work is achieved through policy research, local coalitions coordination, advocacy, capacity building, and grassroots organizing. The focus of CHC’s policy work is to address disparities and inequities through our three main pillars:

  • Health Care Systems: improving access and utilization of health systems.
  • Community Resiliency: Identifying the facilitating factors to positioning and sustaining community driven resiliency that leads to systems change.
  • Economic Resiliency: Identifying and implementing sustainable and systemic solutions to improve the economic resiliency for under-resourced communities like South LA.

The Policy Administrative Coordinator reports directly to the Vice President of Policy and Government Affairs (VP) and serves as the special assistant to the VP. In this role the candidate will coordinate meetings, monitor and provide updates and analysis of key policy issues at national, state, county and local levels; assisting in the management of various policy coalitions; outlining policy recommendations via CHC publications (i.e. policy reports, comment letters). The Policy Administrative Coordinator works in partnership with the Policy Analyst to coordinate special projects, compile information and complete complex reports. Interfaces with external stakeholders including senior representatives of state, local or federal government agencies and/or private sector companies. Sensitivity to confidential matters, a high level of professionalism, tact and diplomacy are paramount. Specifically, the Policy Administrative Coordinator will be responsible for supporting the VP through a combination of project management, writing and editing, research, and high level administrative and relationship support functions. Coordinates special projects, compiles information and completes complex reports and analysis.

The Policy Administrative Coordinator must be creative and enjoy working within a small, entrepreneurial environment that is mission-driven, results-driven and community oriented. The ideal individual will have the ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations, with strong written and verbal communication, administrative, and organizational skills, and the ability to maintain a realistic balance among multiple priorities.

Description of job duties and responsibilities

  • Provide direct administrative support to the VP of Policy and Government Affairs in ensuring the effective coordination of key local strategic initiatives and special projects to support the initiative’s goals, including long-term strategic vision and short-term objectives.
  • Create and maintain a calendar of external community events/meetings/coalitions/conferences relevant to strategic plan.
  • Manages internal and external special projects in coordination with other departments and/or organizations on behalf of the VP.
  • Schedules meetings and prepare materials and notes, and ensures follow-up for various stakeholder meetings including staff and other convenings.
  • Drafts and edits various documents including internal/external correspondence.
  • Creates and maintains files, reviews drafts and finished documents for accuracy and grammar, including documents of a sensitive or confidential nature.
  • Collaborates with the policy and research teams to track, research and analyze local and state policies to support the implementation of CHC’s policy priorities.
  • Assists in coordinating activities between the agency and various outside parties including corporations, non-profit organizations, foundations, sub-grant recipients and local and state elected officials.
  • Makes high level contacts of a complex nature inside and outside of the agency.
  • Keeps abreast of VP’s immediate and long-term commitments and plans; identifies conflicts, flags problems for intervention and corrects course as appropriate.
  • Provides input on the impact of changes in the policy landscape as it aligns with CHC priorities.
  • Supports the promotion of policies that transform the city’s infrastructure to create health supporting community resources for economic parity in South Los Angeles.  
  • Outreach, organize, and actively engage community members in public decision-making processes at the local, state and/or national level, including providing support for CHC’s healthcare coalitions. 
  • Prepares annotated agendas for internal/external meetings with officers, directors, staff, and contractors in support of the VP.
  • Coordinates and/or performs the completion and submission of quarterly and annual reports in concert with the VP.
  • Supports the VP in the development and implementation of existing and new strategies to advance CHC’s priorities including advocacy activities and communication efforts.
  • Exemplifies strong teamworking skills with CHC’s teams, special committees, contractors, and consultants to support the execution of key initiatives.
  • Continually assesses the workplan and facilitates contingencies and/or resolutions that may be needed to support the effective management and implementation of projects/tasks.  

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Arts degree from accredited college OR equivalent of 3+ years’ experience in a fast-paced, large non-profit or public or private sector organization supporting an executive-level individual or team.
  • Experience working in a community-based non-profit setting.
  • Strong customer-service orientation.
  • Knowledge of Los Angeles area policy issues, especially issues relevant to South Los Angeles preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (especially Microsoft PPT and Excel)
  • Ability to interact with diverse populations, sectors and disciplines at all levels—public-legislatures, government, private enterprises, nonprofit organizations, and specifically with South LA residents.
  • Critical and strategic thinker who thrives in innovation.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment while maintaining an entrepreneurship spirit.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as excellent public speaking skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel locally and in accordance with COVID-19 guidelines.
  • Professional demeanor, able to function independently and within a team.
  • Knowledge of Asana Project Management a plus.
  • Knowledge of good office management principles.
  • Excellent problem-solving, decision-making, interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Editing and proofreading skills are essential.
  • Strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and concurrently prioritize multiple projects with competing deadlines.
