reform and government ethics in order to strengthen democracy and return government to the

American people. To do that, we are building the bipartisan coalition we need to win

game-changing reform, and educating lawmakers and the public about pragmatic, bipartisan solutions.

Job Description

The legislative assistant will work with the legislative director to implement Issue One’s agenda for political reform. The legislative assistant will provide input to the legislative director and executive director regarding lobbying strategy and legislative targets, with an eye towards finding new partners to work with on the Hill and identifying new and creative entry points to engage members of Congress and congressional staff on reform issues.



  • Provides input to the legislative director regarding lobbying strategy, legislative targeting, and prioritization for bills and initiatives that our organization supports.
  • Works closely with the legislative director to execute lobbying strategy by meeting with members of Congress and congressional staff to discuss legislation and policy ideas — both substantively and strategically — in order to identify champions for legislation, recruit cosponsors, promote the organization’s policy position, and ascertain a congressional offices’ appetite for reform efforts.
  • Collaboratively create written appeals to Congress.
  • Research and write policy documents and memoranda.


  • Formulate and assess ethics policies and practices for the federal government.
  • Collaboratively create materials to promote ethics reform to elites, the media, and the American public.


  • Interface with coalition partners and like-minded organizations to discuss and promote Issue One’s work and identify potential areas of collaboration.
  • Assist other staff with describing internally and externally our legislative work.
  • Related duties, as needed.

Position Requirements

  • Candidate must have 3-5 years of legislative, lobbying, or government relations experience and a proven affinity for working in a cross-partisan manner (Congressional experience especially valuable);
  • Must be able to think about legislative relations creatively and be willing to try multiple approaches;
  • Should have strong interpersonal and communications skills and the demonstrated ability to understand and describe complex policy using plain language;
  • Must be able to quickly reprioritize work and juggle multiple projects without sacrificing quality and while maintaining a positive attitude;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team; and
  • Demonstrated and strong connection to Issue One’s mission of political reform.
  • This position will require registering as a lobbyist under the Lobbying Disclosure Act. Commitment to following applicable lobbying, disclosure, and ethics rules is necessary.

Salary & Benefits

Issue One offers competitive salaries, including benefits for all full-time employees. Salary range is $60,000 — $72,500.
