The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is looking for an enthusiastic communications professional who can contribute to developing and implementing earned, paid and social media strategies that support public health policies in low- and middle-income countries. We want someone with a communications or related degree and 1-2 years of experience who is excited about using their skills to help address one of the deadliest – but entirely solvable – global health crises of our time: tobacco and nicotine use.
The International Communications Associate (Associate) will serve as a vital member of the International Communications unit putting the building blocks in place for innovative, dynamic campaigns that support health advocacy organizations around the world and playing a key role in the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use.
The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is fighting for a world free of the death and disease caused by tobacco. We work in low- and middle-income countries – where over 80 percent of the world’s smokers live – to support the adoption and implementation of proven solutions that reduce tobacco use and save lives. Over the last 15 years we have worked with local partners and allies in low- and middle-income countries to prevent over 35 million premature deaths!
This position is based in Washington, D.C. Currently all staff are working remotely. Reentry to the D.C. office is expected in January, 2022 under a hybrid work model. Full COVID 19 vaccination requirements apply.
What You’ll Accomplish
Working primarily with the International Communications unit comprised of staff in DC and communications colleagues around the world, you will play a critical role in a fast-paced, always-changing program aimed at passing public health laws in low- and middle-income countries. You will:
· Report to and work closely with the Director of International Advocacy Communications to develop, implement, and support communications strategies as an essential element of public policy campaigns, in partnership with colleagues at Tobacco-Free Kids and tobacco-control advocates in our priority countries.
· Support the implementation of strategies to increase the capacity of the media in priority countries to report on tobacco control, including journalism workshops and other programs.
· Support the implementation of strategies to enhance the capacity of partners in priority countries to conduct effective communications strategies. Capacity-building sessions in this and the previous bullet may be held remotely, or on site in the relevant country.
· At times, review grant proposals from advocacy organizations to ensure communications activities in the proposed scope of work appear effective and on-point.
· Help coordinate communications and media strategies for our anti-tobacco-industry TakeAPart campaigns, ensuring that our campaign tools and media materials are appropriately tailored for our in-country partners.
Qualifications you’ll bring to this role:
· A keen desire to exercise your love for strategic communications to alleviate social injustice.
· Bachelor’s degree in communications or related field. Many applicants are also expected to have completed their Master’s degree.
· 2-3 years of experience in communications, preferably in a policy or advocacy setting.
· Excellent writing and editing skills.
· Team-player attitude and ability to handle multiple tasks in fast-paced environment.
· Experience working at the international level and in cross-cultural settings preferred.
· Willingness and desire to travel internationally.
· Foreign language proficiency a plus.
