ISLA Policy Research and Advocacy Manager

The Policy Research and Advocacy Manager is responsible for carrying out policy,

advocacy, and research activities for ISLA. ISLA is looking to focus research activities

and advocacy on education for Latino students in North Carolina from Early

childhood (birth-8yrs old) to 12th grade. This position includes coordinating and

developing the policy aspects of ISLA’s Padres con Voz Network: research, advocacy,

and the development of partnerships, which the manager will do by working closely

with the Parent and Community Engagement Coordinator, Education Programs

Director, Education Programs Manager, and Executive Director. The manager will also

engage actively in professional learning and development and will represent ISLA at

conferences. 

Responsibilities

1. Serve as the manager for ISLA’s research and advocacy interventions on education for Latino students.

  • Develop and maintain key partnerships with external organizations working on education
  • Represent ISLA at conferences, and do presentations on education for Latino students
  • Serve as ISLA’s representative in the Padres con Voz Network
  • Initiate a creative advocacy campaign to highlight the need for Latino parents to navigate the educational system in North Carolina

2. Research

  • Conceptualize and lead ISLA’s research on Early Childhood, bilingual education, English language learners, and secondary education for Latino students
  • Conduct and coordinate community-based participatory action research in collaboration with Latino parents in the North Carolina community
  • Regularly conduct and/or coordinate relevant research on community-based participatory action research to support the strategy development of the campaign
  • Regularly conduct and/or coordinate policy analysis of local and state policies that impact research and community
  • Train and work closely with ISLA Parent Research Team members on participatory action research methods

3. Other Key Programmatic Areas

  • Support other ISLA projects
  • Project grants management, and reporting
  • Support the ISLA development support team with research for additional funding opportunities, developing proposals and budgets, participating in negotiating agreements with funders, and ensuring that grant agreements are implemented
  • Work with the Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation team and other relevant staff to ensure external evaluations of grants

Educational requirements

Completed bachelor's degree in the following: Public Policy, Human Development and Family Studies, and/or Education.

Experience required

  • Experience of working on education policy
  • 1-2 years of experience related to research, policy, and advocacy experience within the field of education
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing training and workshops for diverse groups
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating complex projects or campaigns with multiple partners
  • Policy advocacy experience in the public interest
  • Strong Speaking and writing proficiency in Spanish
