The Director of Education and Job Development will oversee and manage the strategy, operations, services and programs delivered by the Education and Employment Department to immigrants in Akron and Summit County. Educational services are provided for immigrants and refugees new to the Akron-Summit County area, those working on becoming citizens, and those who are interested in learning and continuing their English language education. Educational programs include cultural orientation, ESOL education, Job and Life Skills education, along with support resources. 

Preparing immigrants to engage and feel welcome in the Akron area community is paramount to this work. To accomplish this, employment and job development services are also provided to immigrants. Employment services include: job search preparation, resume/application support, job referrals and support.

The Director of Education and Job Development will ensure that the work processes of education and employment services are integrated and coordinated. This position leads a team of professionals committed to providing outstanding service to their clients. The Director is expected to actively engage across all departments within IIA; manage, recruit, and train instructors; develop curriculum; secure education materials and supplies, and directly engage with community organizations, local businesses/employers, academic institutions, and education organizations to advance the IIA mission.

Understanding of the social, political and cultural complexities associated with the immigration environment today, as well as having a keen appreciation for diversity is essential. The IIA organizational culture is one that models diversity, equity, inclusion and access internally and externally.

While this position is full time 8:30am-4:30pm Monday through Friday, IIA supports flexible hours as appropriate. Evening and weekend hours may be required.


Responsibilities:

The Director is responsible for working closely with the Executive Director to establish the department’s plans ensuring linkage to the IIA mission and strategy. Since the Director is responsible for both Education and Job Development, the incumbent must be able to effectively manage the operations and the staffing for both education and employment functions.

Specific responsibilities include:

·       Assessing needs, establishing and implementing plans to prepare for increases in the number of immigrants settling in the Akron-Summit County area

·       Budget and resource management

·       Talent management of the internal team

·       Goal setting and action planning

·       Tracking and reporting

·       Engagement in strategy development/implementation

·       Coordination of department operations, as well as scheduling

·       Establishing and maintaining relationships with educators and employers, as well as partner organizations

·       Staying current on immigration, education and employment policies, practices and trends

·       Integrating an understanding and appreciation for cultural differences and other aspects of diversity in work processes

·       Establishing a system for tracking, reporting, record keeping and analytics

·       Participating in grant identification and allocation processes

·       Other activities as directed by the Executive Director.


Job Qualifications

This position requires a master’s degree or equivalent in education or related field.TESOL certification preferred.

The director of the department must be experienced, motivated, and dedicated to achieving learning and employment outcomes. This position requires relevant prior work, especially related to adult education, as well as people management experience. Experience developing curriculum and managing educational programs is also required. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are a must. Also requires strong organizational, collaboration, problem solving and project management skills.

Priority is given to individuals who are knowledgeable and have experience working with English speakers of other languages and immigrants or refugees in an education, employment and non-profit setting. Knowledge of Microsoft Office and TESOL certification is highly preferred.
