The Center for Court Innovation is a non-profit organization that works to create a fair, effective, and humane justice system by performing original research and helping launch justice reforms around the world. The Center creates operating projects that have been documented to reduce the use of jail and prison, assist victims of crime, and strengthen communities.

The Center is seeking a General Counsel to join its executive team, serve as the organization’s chief legal advisor, and lead a growing Office of the General Council that advances the Center’s mission while assessing and managing organizational risk.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the General Counsel will provide strategic legal advice and oversee all legal matters and services across the Center. The General Counsel will advise executive and senior management on governance, contracts, risk management, real estate transactions, litigations, benefits, and employment law issues. The General Counsel will also serve as the Secretary to the Board of Directors, liaising with the Board on legal and governance matters.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Nonprofit Law & Compliance

  • Work closely with the executive team and Board of Directors to ensure organizational compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations;
  • Develop and implement systems and processes for organizational compliance related to its nonprofit status, funding streams, and contract and grant obligations;
  • Guide and advise leadership and staff on compliance related to lobbying and legislative advocacy;
  • Advise officers of the Board on matters of organizational governance and compliance with governing law;

Contract Review & Negotiation

  • Play a key role in contract negotiations with government, philanthropic, and nonprofit partners; once secured, ensure organizational compliance with contracts;
  • As lead of the office of General Counsel, oversee review and negotiation for a variety of contracts including but not limited to grants and funding contracts, consultant agreements, memoranda of understanding, leases, and data sharing agreements;

Leadership & Strategy

  • Build and lead a robust Office of the General Counsel that serves the needs of a growing nonprofit;
  • Participate in strategic planning and response; anticipate issues, estimate risks strategically and identify proactive solutions;

Human Resources

  • Manage the organization’s Equal Employment Opportunity/Anti-Discrimination functions, including conducting EEO investigations, drafting reports, determining policy and legal violations and coordinating resulting activities with the Director of Human Resources;
  • Serve as the primary legal advisor to Human Resources, advising on employee disciplinary process and implementation of determinations and outcomes of disciplinary or investigative process;


  • Manage all litigation and serve as a primary point of contact for external counsels (including participating in the selection and retention of external counsel) and other parties involved in litigation;
  • Other relevant duties, as assigned.

Required Skills:

  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent judgment and discretion, especially regarding confidential and sensitive matters
  • Strong research, analytical and critical thinking skills


  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA Accredited U.S. Law School;
  • Admitted to practice law in New York State;
  • Eight years of legal practice, including 3-5 years of experience in a nonprofit contract administration, risk management, and/or compliance management leadership role;
  • Strong understanding of nonprofit law and tax regulations and nonprofit compliance;
  • Experience leading and managing a team.

Compensation: Commensurate with experience.
