DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

  • Answering incoming telephone calls on a multi-line telephone system, screening calls for possible intakes from consumers, counseling consumers about their housing rights, making appropriate referrals, and maintaining a detailed consumer inquiry log with inquiry details and actions taken.
  • Performing intake of housing discrimination complaints from consumers regarding housing-related transactions in the areas of rental housing, real estate sales, mortgage lending, zoning, land use, advertising, etc.
  • Assisting staff with case management, investigations, and all functions related to such including drafting correspondence to clients, interviewing witnesses, gathering documentation, inspecting non-compliance issues, making referrals to enforcement agencies, etc.
  • Assisting staff with advocacy efforts involving consumers with disabilities to assist them in obtaining reasonable accommodations and/or modifications in housing.
  • Assisting with the planning, organization, and implementation of the Council’s education and outreach activities and other fair housing activities.
  • Assisting with the direct mailing/distribution of the Council’s advertising and promotional materials to educate consumers about their rights and raise community awareness of the Council’s mission, programs, and services.
  • Assisting staff with collecting information about housing facilities in San Antonio, Bexar County, and surrounding counties. 
  • Contacting apartment complexes, real estate agencies, mortgage lending companies, etc. (both on-site and via telephone) in order to collect information about housing practices.
  • Typing and logging general correspondence.
  • Processing, registering, and dispersing all incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Performing general office tasks such as copying, faxing, scanning, and filing.
  •  And all other duties as assigned.


EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or GED necessary. Some college courses a plus.


QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  • Must have excellent typing and computer skills.
  • Must have excellent proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Internet Explorer.
  • Must be proficient using office equipment (facsimile, copier, printers, etc.).
  • Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret legal documents, federal fair housing statutes, regulations, court cases, etc. 
  • Must be dedicated to the fair housing rights of all protected classes under federal, state, and local laws which include protections from discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, familial status, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, creed, and marital status.
  • Must have excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Must have reliable transportation.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous experience in social work, legal services, or civil rights is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak Spanish fluently is preferred but not required.

  

WORK SCHEDULE:

  • 20 hours per week; Monday through Friday; flexible schedule.
