DC Central Kitchen (DCCK) is one of America's leading nonprofit organizations and a social enterprise pioneer, using food as a tool to strengthen bodies, empower minds, and build communities. For twenty-six years, we have prepared adults with histories of incarceration, addiction, homelessness, trauma, and chronic unemployment for meaningful careers in the food service industry. We in turn hire many of our graduates to support our social enterprise portfolio, which includes preparing 12,000 meals for our community each day, catering corporate events, and delivering wholesale produce to corner stores in low-income neighborhoods. Launched in 2001, The Campus Kitchens Project (CKP) is DC Central Kitchen’s national arm and one of its five social ventures. CKP empowers students to create sustainable solutions to hunger, food waste, and poverty in their communities. On over 60 university and high school campuses across the country, student leaders transform unused, high-nutrient food from dining halls, grocery stores, restaurants, and farmers’ markets into meals that are delivered to local agencies serving those in need, all while building meaningful leadership skills. Our student leaders go “Beyond the Meal” by implementing community building initiatives that advance our mission of breaking systemic barriers that cause food insecurity, poverty, and food waste. Our six Beyond the Meal programs include Nutrition Education, SNAP Outreach, Health & Wellness, Financial Literacy, Awareness Campaigns, and Civic Education.


ABOUT THE ROLE:


The Regional Program Specialist position was recently created to advance The Campus Kitchens Project's mission and values by shaping a regional strategy for affiliate identity development and network growth. The Regional Program Specialist for the Southeast Region will oversee expansion and affiliate management in: the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Florida.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:


Regional Network Management:

  • Coach first-year affiliates in the region as they launch and begin shaping their programming through regular check-in calls and in-person assistance (as needed).
  • Manage and support a cadre of Alumni Advisors (who coach all affiliate chapters in the region older than one year) through regular communication one-on-one and as a group, leadership development guidance, and technical assistance as needed.
  • Provide student leaders and Alumni Advisors with guidance on resume writing, career planning, and other leadership development advice as needed; empower them to leverage their interests and skills through professional development opportunities.
  • Foster a regional identity among existing Campus Kitchens through cross-affiliate collaboration and regional networking.
  • Assist with donor and alumni relationship cultivation by creating engagement opportunities for individuals and organizations, connecting the network to small-scale regional grants, and identifying opportunities for formal partnerships.
  • Assist with or spearhead short and long-term projects that will further the CKP's brand and improve its resources for existing affiliates.


Regional Network Expansion:

  • Execute a strategy for expanding the number of affiliates in the region through relationship building and developing outreach campaigns that include but aren’t limited to: virtual information sessions, in-person pitch meetings, attending relevant conferences, and developing email and collateral blasts.
  • Collaborate with Program Design Specialist to prepare prospective Campus Kitchen affiliates by participating in launch planning conversations and in-person support and training.
  • Galvanize relationships with likeminded organizations across the region to cross-pollinate successes and build CKP brand awareness through regional partnerships and exchanges.
  • Monitor relevant industry news in the region including: grant making opportunities, food waste/hunger/social justice events, school news outlets, trade publications.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • An interest in and understanding of social justice, community development, public health, and/or environmental justice
  • At least two years’ professional experience working in community development, college student engagement, nutrition, public health, environmental justice efforts, or other related field
  • Connections to the higher education / social justice community in this region is a plus
  • Experience developing and implementing results-driven community programs
  • Expertise in one or more of CKP’s Beyond the Meal programs strongly preferred: Nutrition Education, SNAP Outreach, Health & Wellness, Financial Literacy, Social Awareness Campaigns, and Civic Education
  • Experience working with high school or college students, seniors, rural communities, children, adults with employment barriers, or underserved communities
  • Strong communication (written and verbal), group facilitation, and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to work independently, problem solve, think creatively, strategize, and balance short and long-term goals
  • Demonstrated ability to understand, work with, and meet the cultural needs of diverse student populations
  • Confident computer skills—Microsoft Office suite and online research
  • Ability to travel independently around the region and to CKP HQ in Washington, DC—on average 1-2 days/month
  • Cooking and food safety experience preferred—professional or otherwise


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The position requires the ability to:
  • travel independently via personal vehicle, train, and airplane travel during all seasons
  • perform general physical activities that require full range of motion, such as climbing stairs, squatting, kneeling, lifting items, driving, and sitting and standing for long periods of time,
  • occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
